moving cross country with pets

hey,

anyone have any suggestions on moving cross country with a dog (will be just over a year) and a cat who would be 2 years?

  • how are they on short trips around the neighborhood? if they get stressed on short trips (and maybe just in case) talk to your vet about your trip and your concern. you can get some meds to sedate them if need be but only use it if necessary. While at the vet make sure they are up to date/ not close to being due for vaccines and get a copy of their records to carry with you in the car. I say really plan your trip in advance. know where you plan to stop and look for hotels that take your pets. plan for shorter days rather than long days and take a few stops a day. Whenever you stop let dog out to to stretch their legs. The cat is a little more difficult sometimes staying in the carrier is easier for them but maybe let them out in the car at rest stops. let them have water when you stop too. make sure that where ever they are in the car is secure from baggage falling on them and well ventilated especially if they are in carriers in the back of the car. and don't leave the animals in the car unattended it gets hot fast. make sure you bring a litter box you can set up for your cat.

  • PP did a great job with some tips.

Do you have any questions about anything specifically?  It is kind of a broad question.

  • Driving or flying?

Rusty did fine with both - but some airlines have flying restrictions because of temperatures because the storage areas are not climate controlled.

Flying - in the crate we had his dog bed plus a wool blanket with a water bottle attached. The airline people were great. Make sure you know where to pick up the dog and put "live animal" stickers and "this side up" stickers along with your name and contact info in a permanant marker directly on the crate.

Driving - we stopped often, stayed at a hotel that allowed dogs and just made sure to get him out of the car every chance we could.
