Switching out summer clothes for winter

I must be a weirdo because I enjoy this!  Both mine and the kid's stuff.  I started his in late August when pants weather rolled around.  I needed him to try on some stuff and I knew he'd flip if I made him do it all at once.  So I did a few pieces at a time to make sure leg and sleeve length were ok and waists didn't need to be adjusted.  Mostly I wanted to be sure I didn't need to buy anything else.

Re: Switching out summer clothes for winter

  • Oh good, please come to my house tomorrow afternoon & do mine for me!  I hate it.

Mostly I hate having to pack up all of the stuff that doesn't fit, find a bin or box, fold it all up, then have Brian haul those up to the attic.  Then, when that's done, he has to bring down the bin of clothes that used to be Jake's, so I can go through it and pull stuff out for Liam that is seasonably appropriate, then wash it all.

there is nothing I enjoy about the process. I usually only do it because her drawers get too full or she tries to wear a sundress when it is snowing out.

haha, that's exactly what's happening in our house right now, their drawers are overflowing having 2 seasons stuffed into them.

And I always have to hide Jake's shorts in another room, or he would be busting them out in January.

  • I love the idea of getting to wear clothes that I haven't worn in a while, but I think I would enjoy the process of switching things out if I had an easier time purging clothes.  My closet is jam packed with clothes I don't even wear, but I have such a hard time getting rid of clothes!

When I determine that something doesn't fit or is unflattering, I have to physically remove it from my closet and either pitch it or put it in the goodwill bag in the basement.  Otherwise I will grab it and wear if I'm running late or try to give it "just one more chance" and end up looking terrible.  I'd rather have one week's worth of outfits that fit than a full closet of "iffy" stuff.

  • I hate the chore, too.  The only good part about this chore for the kids now, is that when Brody outgrows clothes, I can get rid of all of them.  WHEEEEEE!  It's so freeing to not have to store that crap anymore.  And now that Noah is older, there is a lot less "usable" clothes to put away for Brody.   He blows the knees out of almost every pair of pants he owns.   So I just had one small pile of things that I'm keeping for Brody.   I love the purging.

But the washing and sorting and putting away of all of the clothes - I hate.

exactly. I had been packing things in bins in dd's closet but now there is no room. Well there wasn't room like a year ago so I left a lot of fall dresses hanging up...so I guess I don't have to get those out now since they are still there!! Dd's closet is a disaster. I need to get everything out of there but don't know where to really put it all. Blah! I hate it!!!

but yeah one of the main reasons I need to do it now is because dd has been dressing herself on her own. And like Amanda said I can't let her think a sundress is a viable option when it's snowing!

  • I can't stand it b/c I have 3 kids to do it for + me & I'm the only one that does it.  DH barely goes through his clothes as it is.  BUT, Eamon is pretty much done b/c I had tons of hand me downs for him; Caileigh has no hand me downs so its mostly all new & Keira loves to try on "new to her" clothes so that's a plus.  So now its just me.  I feel like I just put my fall/winter clothes away!

what's with the knee holes?  Jake does that to all of his pants now, too!

I have promised my SIL that I will save all of our baby clothes for her...so, I am still faithfully sorting my size, labeling bins, and hauling them to the attic.  she'd better appreciate this! :)

  • Because sliding on your knees and crawling on your knees and letting your friends drag you around by the hands with your legs dragging behind you, particularly in the carpeted playrooms at daycare, is great fun!

And my confession of the day is, I can't wait for the weather to turn, so that he doesn't get to go outside after school anymore.   He has to wear dressier pants to school now (khakis - either khaki, blue or black) and he comes home with them grass stained almost every day.  And I'm over it!

You are a mighty fine SIL!

  • I refuse to do this. I'd rather throw things away to make room for all seasons than have to switch out clothes. Luckily we have the space now where we don't have to worry about it, but before we moved I kept my sweaters in an amoire in the living room because I didn't want to have to pack them away and bring them out every year.
