Need suggestions please!

So I have a deck off the back of my house.  We have the sun beating down all day so we needed shade.  We ended up getting one of those pop up things for shade. I also want to add some privacy because our yard is open to all neighbors.  I was thinking making curtains would be easy and could easily attach using tabs at the top.  Now I want it to look nice but I don't want to spend tons of money because in a few years we will be doing something more permanent so I am looking for ideas for something that would look nice, is easy to make, maybe could be washed etc.  Thanks!  I was thinking maybe a gauzy or sheer type I don't need it completely blacked. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

How much time are you willing to spend on making something?

  • Really as much time as it takes I am in no time rush.

  • A thought I had was to build something using wires or PVC pipes - if you use PVC you most certainly have to do a lot of sewing to cover - but it could work - just think outta the box.

With wires you could use shower curtain hooks.

All perhaps you could create a pagoda type structure with wood or with fabric.

  • This is so ironic! A couple of years ago I created the same thing that you are looking for, for the same reasons!

I took two Queen size Top Sheets, sewed them together lengthwise on one side of each, and then laid them down on top of our umbrella. Next, I pinned pleats until it was neatly fitting the length of the long side of the umbrella. I then sewed the pleats. The next step is to sew the soft or "Loop" side of Velcro to the top end of the sheets, and the rough scratchy or "Hook" side of the velcro to the umbrella's long edge. This way, you can remove your (I call it) umbrella cabana when you need to. I have made two so far, the pic below is the first one, then this year i made another from a blue and beige striped set of top sheets. I like using them because they are lightweight fabric.

It has been such a HUGE help with the sun blaring in that one side all of the time! Now we can sit on our deck and enjoy the outdoors!
