Anyone have a Ford Escape?

Both mine and DH's cars are getting up there (mine in years, his in miles), so we're starting to casually look at cars for when one of ours dies. We want AWD or 4WD since we live in a little more rural area. I was set on a Subaru or Toyota, but DH saw his co-workers Ford Escape and wants to get one of those. I haven't heard a lot of good things about Ford cars, so I'm hesitant. But it looks like the 2011 models on have good ratings on Consumer Reports.

Thoughts? Pros? Cons? Another compact SUV that you love? (for the record - he does not want a Honda or a Mazda at all)

Re: Anyone have a Ford Escape?

  • If you guys are looking used, let me know. My dad is still in Robinson as the GM. I do love my Jeep Patriot, 75,000 miles, 5 years, no issues but they may be a bit small for you. My sister has a RAV4 that she really likes and Nathan just got a Toyota FJ and so far he is happy with it.
  • Hi Gwen!

My parents have a 2008 Escape and have had a few issues with it that occurred after their 3 year warranty was up. It was making this god-awful screeching noise when they turned the engine on ? I don?t know the cause but it was a $500 repair. Then the hinges on the front passenger side door broke ? they could not close the door ? and had to have that repaired - $800. The motor in one of the power windows went too. I love the look of their Ford Escape but all of their issues was enough for me to stand clear from purchasing one!

I have a 2007 Jeep Patriot, which is a reasonable priced roomy compact SUV. We bought a first year model and it had a few hiccups, but I would definitely buy another one. It?s a 4x4 model and has done great in the snow. We also just bought a  2013 Hyundai Sonata. It?s not an SUV, but it?s VERY ROOMY. There is actually more room in the back seat and trunk and there is in our Patriot. It also has traction control ? I?m actually really looking forward to seeing how it handles the snow in the winter. My Aunt has a 2012 Sonata and lives in Jamestown NY 0 they get slammed with snow and she says the Sonata has done great in it. Good luck on your new car search!

Hey Kris, we are most likely looking at used, so I'll definitely keep you posted! I'm totally in favor of a RAV4, I just have to get Sean on board;) I think we need to actually get out and look at cars on the lot - most of our looking has just been 'hey did you see x car out on the road - I like the look of it'. :)

Definitely have to drive it. My sister ended up with the RAV4 because it was a good deal and had sat on the lot for a while and they were going to send it to auction. He wanted my sister Kait to buy it, but she wanted a new car (she bought a Jeep Compass). Erin loves the RAV.

Nathan was between the FJ and an Nissan XTerra, but we on a whim went to test drive the FJ and he really liked it. He kept his truck but he wanted a new daily driver and the free Stinkaroo, sorry Subaru was no longer cutting it. Plus, it made a concession and finally bought an automatic so I can drive it.

It seems like you guys have had good luck with Jeeps, right? My family had one when I was younger and it was kind of a lemon, so I don't have a great impression of them, but I know people love them.

I'm excited to go out and test drive cars and get a new one...just not excited for a car payment:P We've been without a car payment for almost 3 years and I kind of want to cry thinking about having one!

  • We have always had good luck, the only issues I had were with the sunroof but that issue was resolved. A lot of problems come from lack of maintenance. My 4WD is awesome, Nathan is highly impressed. We drove my mom's Grand Cherokee on vacation, I didn't want to give it back.Stick out tongue But my sisters both have Compass; Emilie's is an 2007 and Kaitlin's is a 2011 and no issues. My sister Kelly has a 2007 Commander, she has had a couple issues but they were more do to the fact she has wrecked it 20 times.

If you are looking at cars, the new Dodge Dart is suposedly awesome. It was rated the safest sedan by the Insurance Institute and won a bunch of awards. My dad says he wished he would got one of those instead of his Challenger SRT-8 (it was a gift for his service and it now sits in his garage).

  • That's good to know - I'll have to put them on our list of possibilities. We're leaning toward a small SUV for the first replacement, but I wouldn't mind a car for our second (we're thinking both cars will need replacing around the same time, so we're keeping the 2nd in the back of our mind).
  • Sorry that you will have a car payment again.  I wrecked my Elantra three months before it was about to be paid off.  That was a sad day!

I have a 2011 Escape with zero issues so far!  I bought it new and already have almost 36K on it (we drive a LOT!), so it's almost out of warranty.  Hopefully we continue with no issues.

I test drove the Escape in the winter in snow north of Slippery Rock, which was a great experience.  I drove a used FWD Ford Edge and the AWD Ford Escape and loved the Escape much more. The Escape handled so much better in the snow, but I guess it really wasn't apples-to-apples there -- it was just the Edge they had on the lot.

DH is actually looking at the 2013 Escape for after the baby arrives.  Hopefully he is enjoying his last days of having a 2-door car!

I'm about to put my first set of tires on the Escape and, boy, do I miss my Hyundai Elantra right now because of the tire prices.
