Should I wait to decorate?

I'm moving into my first house next month and I'm driving myself crazy/happy with decorating ideas and plans. HOWEVER, my mom and even my real estate agent said I should wait like 3 months or so before doing ANY decorating to decide what I really want etc.

Do you agree? Did you wait when you moved into a new place?

(The biggest thing that bugs me is the kitchen back splash)

 Thanks!

Re: Should I wait to decorate?

  • We had most of our furnature ect before we moved into our house....we were lucky because it went quite well with the size/style of the house. There were some decorating things we did right away because it really needed it. (One of the guest bedrooms was bubblegum pink with castles on the walls), but I think for something like a backsplash or things that are more or less long term I would wait at least until you actually are living in the house before you make decisions on styles....what you think you might like now, you might decide you don't think will work as well once you are more familiar with the space...

I dont think you need to wait 3 months, but wait at least a few weeks after moving into the house, houses can take completely different feels once your stuff is in them and your lifestyle may lend you to make different choices then you are currently thinking of.

Buy accessories now if you need something to hold you over! I know its hard to not get excited about decorating when you finally find the place you are going to live!

  • I can see waiting a little while before doing anything big, but if you just mean hanging stuff up, I would do it whenever you feel inspired to do it!

As far as paint - maybe wait a week or so to really see the light in your house.  I bought paint before we moved, and the room we painted doesnt have as much light as I assumed, so it is a shade or two darker than I would have picked had I just been patient and understood how the sun hits our house.

  • I hired painters to paint every room before we moved in.  The house had great lines; but the colors chosen by the prior owners did not match our tastes.  The lemon yellow and dark olive bedrooms had to go.
  • We didn't have any major renos; it was all just cosmetic stuff but we jumped right in. We spent a long time deciding on paint colors before we even closed, so that as soon as we got the keys, we could put samples on the wall and decide. Within a few days of closing, we had started painting all the rooms. We also had to buy quite a bit of furniture and jumped right in. We still have some left to buy but took a break for monetary reasons.

I would say any huge renovations, like redoing a kitchen or bath, I probably would wait until I am moved in and settled otherwise. But cosmetic things, we changed right away.

Now if the house is a total fixer, I think renovations would probably be realistically done prior to moving in, but if it's just one or two things, I'd probably wait.

  • I agree in waiting for major renovations but for things like furniture, wall color, etc. I would do it now. THat's the fun of having a new place!
