front entry wood door - ADVICE PLEASE!!

Calling all door experts! I am looking for a 3/4 glass door like this:
www.vintagedoors.com/prod/solid_wood_glass/G114_df.jpg

I have seen them range in price from $500 to $4,000. I have no idea what to look out for. I've looked at endless sites I've never heard of and really need guidance. The site that appeals to me the most is www.vintagedoors.com, however they need a lot of information that I don't even understand to even get a quote.

I know I want:
quality
warranty
efficient glass
solid wood (mahogany, oak, walnut, etc.)
reasonable price, under $1,000 (or am I not going to get quality under that price?)

Can you rule any brands, retailers or anything that I should rule in or out?

Eager and frustrated :/

Re: front entry wood door - ADVICE PLEASE!!

  • Hi.  That door is beautiful.  Have you tried checking out your local Habitat ReStore or salvage place?

Where are you located?  We got an amazing door from a local place in the hudson valley area of ny.  Solid wood cottage door looks similar to this:  http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Cottage-Wood-Entry-Door-6-Lite-Arch-Beadboard-Panel-/16/!BjFyS4wBWk~$(KGrHqEH-C0Es80BymBrBLSJ(SqD7g~~_35.JPG     with 2 full mahogany side lights for under 1000.

  • That's my area too! Where did you go? :)
  • HI!   We went to the Door Jamb in Shokan.  It was about 45 minutes north of us but worth it.  They have hundreds if not thousands of doors.  Some are surplus, some were from other homes.  One door was 6,000 and10 feet tall with the most amazing iron work I've ever seen.  They are also Emtek dealers.  Great people to work with.  We were about 2-3 hours debating doors.  They had shown us the one we got initially when I explained what our house looked like and what style door we were searching.  My h and I waffled between 2 door styles and loads of sidelights.  I am so happy we went there.  I will post a pic asap.

  •

Pardon the debris etc, this is the door minus the new lockset which I still need to order.  The side lights and door have since been stripped and will be painted.

  • gorgeous! and thank you so much for sharing! can i ask what prices were like on doors and sidelites like yours? you did get something very very close to what i want!! the only difference is the glass panel on the door. i'm assuming there is no warranty from this place and you install yourself.

also, did you do any sanding or restaining?

  • No clue about warranty, or install. We had gutted out our main floor so had contractor and the hubs put in the new door.

Actually I used Citristrip from Home Depot and it worked like a charm!

    Sending you a pm.
