Classy, Gamer-friendly living room decor advice?

I'll be moving into a new apartment at the beginning of November. Husband is already moved into the apartment (long story short, he is in the Air Force stationed in Germany and we are recently married). He is waiting until I get there to do any kind of home decor so that we can make the big decisions together, but I am trying to get a jump start on ideas before I get there.

We are both avid gamers (mostly PC gamers, but enjoy console every once in awhile). I'd really like to be able to enjoy having our full PC setup (dual monitors, external speakers and hard drives, etc.) without sacrificing a classy, warm living room. We don't have desks yet, and are open to either sharing one long desk or having 2 separate desks side by side/facing each other/whatever. We are on the 3rd floor so we have a slanted ceiling on one wall.

Does anyone have any ideas of how to make something like this work? The main reason I ask is because most "gamer living rooms" that I've seen in real life are very sparse, cords everywhere, and just not warm and home-y. Any thoughts, advice, pics, etc would be appreciated!

Re: Classy, Gamer-friendly living room decor advice?

  • without knowing the size and layout of the space its hard to say, but I think if you want to keep it a nice living room feel...then for sure hide the computers from the line of vision when you walk into the room (so put the on the same wall as the door so you are not looking at them from the entrance).

Another thing is getting desks that are more stately then say ikea will help...also desks that have the backs closed so you can feed the wires though a hole in the back without having look at them all the time. If the room is narrow maybe even putting curtains up in front of the desks so you can completely hide them from the room when not using them? Hard to say without seeing the room if that would help or look dumb (also if you are renting you may not be allowed)

TV and consols I don't think are as big of a deal, people kind of expect to see a TV in the living room.

  • Just don't do what I did and buy desks/extensions/etc before knowing where your plugs are! Yuck, what a mess!'

edit: Also, my hubby uses all wireless stuff and the TV is one of his monitors, it makes it look like we only have one computer in our living room and my second monitor is off to the side while my main monitor hides inside a hutch unless I'm using it. Not sure it that helps you, but it worked REALLY well to make it look like we didn't live on the computers ;)
