You mentioned yesterday that you color your hair at home. Do you have any tips/advice you can share? My grays are out of control so I was thinking about doing it at home to save money. My hair is very thick and relatively long. I've seen botched home jobs and that's what scares me!
TIA!

Re: **SarahKate**
I have colored my hair at home since I was 14, so easily over 50 times
It's not too difficult. When my hair is long, I get 2 bottles so I have plenty of dye (2 bottles x $9 bottle still WAY less than the salon). I have always used Loreal Excellence or Superior Preference (permanent dyes). It's great coverage and I've never had issues with streaks. I used a Garnier color once and it was streaky. The Excellence comes with a little comb applicator which is great. The gray coverage is so-so. It claims to be great, so maybe my grays are just stubborn.
What color are you trying to do?

I would definitely buy two boxes, just to be safe. It's ridiculous how much hair I have lol
I was thinking about just going with a dark brown, slightly darker than my natural color. My goal is to get rid of the gray, not change my hair color drastically. This might be a dumb question but is it as simple as just following the directions on the box?
If you're not really changing the color, it's going to be really hard to mess it up
It is as simple as the directions. You add the color to the developer (which is in a squirt bottle), shake, and you're ready to go. I start by doing the roots first. Part your hair down the middle, add color and smooth out a few inches, then use a comb to make another part about 1/2 inch away and repeat until all roots are done. Then go back and take a small section at a time and squirt a bit of color down the length of the hair and use your fingers to work it into the strands. I use clips to keep the "done" sections out of my way. It takes me about 30 mins to put on, then you have to wait 30 mins before rinsing it out (clip it all up on your head during this time). If your hair is dry, the conditioner that comes in the box is awesome and your hair will be super smooth and shiny.
Also, if you just want to get rid of the gray and the gray is only at your roots, you could just do the roots. But I wouldn't try that until you've experimented and found a color that really matches your natural color.

Thank you! It's definitely well past the point of my grays just being at my roots. I was thinking that if I stick with dark brown, I'd be safe.
I have a long weekend so I might give it a try. I'll let you know how it turns out!
