Favorite spots in Europe?

Hello!

Im trying to start planning a trip to Europe next fall ( late September or early October) and I'm looking for ideas. What are some of your favorite spots?

A few criteria:

1) I dont want to repeat destinations I've already traveled to. Those would be London, Amsterdam, Florence, Pisa, Venice, cinque Terre, Krakow, Warsaw, Wroclaw. I've been several places in Germany but dont mind repeating Berlin or Munich.

2) we want to end up in Munich for Octoberfest.

3) I am really interested in Slovenia. Anyone been?

Thank you! Just looking for ideas at the moment. Oh. We like a mix of culture and outdoorsy activities, history, good food, etc.

Re: Favorite spots in Europe?

  • i know you've said you've been to florence but that city aside-late sept/early oct is fabulous in tuscany. i've been 2x during that time and it's great. think small tuscan towns (radda is very nice-stayed there for a week) and siena is lovely.

    rome is also nice then.

  • I love Switzerland! We flew into Munich and drove down through Bavaria and into Switzerland. We made stops in Zurich, Lucerne, and Interlaken. We also spent time at Lake Como in Italy, but it's quite the drive. I really enjoyed each city for various reasons, but Interlaken was great for doing outdoorsy things, Zurich good for history and culture, and Lucerne was a mix of the two, as it offered outdoorsy things (Mt. Pilatus excursion, boat rides, strolling around the lake) but also had museums. I think I'd drop everything to move to Lucerne if given the chance. Interlaken is a great jumping off point to head up to Jungfrau and little alpine cities along the way up. As for Slovenia, I have that on my list as well! I can't offer much on it, other than I'm curious as to what others have to say.

  • I can't give first hand recommendations, but I have heard from others who have travelled there that Switzerland and Austria are absolutely gorgeous.  They are very high on my "must see" list.

  • Thank you for the ideas so far!
  • You might try posting something on "that other board" because I'm pretty sure a few people who left have been to Slovenia.

  • Thank you, GilliC. I'll try that!
  • As for cities, my two absolute favorites are Rome and Prague. I love the people, as well as the imperfections and grime mixed with beautiful old buildings and history.

I've never been, but have heard good things about Budapest, Croatia and the Greek islands (probably doable if you go to Slovenia). Personally I'm a wimp in cold weather, so at that time of year I'd stay away from the northern counties.

  • Switzerland & Austria!!!

Barcelona was OK. I didn't go deeper into Spain.

    Budapest was amazing. Prague also.

Rome is fantastic if you missed it before. Venice less so. Florence should be done every trip to Europe ;-)

    I didn't love Nice. Wasn't impressed.

Amsterdam was lovely but not as nice as Budapest, Rome or Florence.
