wedding questions

hello ladies!  it's been awhile since we've had these conversations, but i will take any and all information possible.  my younger brother is getting married in june and i am MOH.  she is only now starting ot think about planning things (she still doesn't have a dress!) and they are on a shoe string budget.  My sister (the chef) is doing her food and she is doing her own cake (she's a pastry chef) and she has photography all worked out.  the wedding is outside in her parents' backyard so there is no venue to think about and no tables needed except for the cake and food.  It's a pig roast actually (my brother definitely wants to use his remote control car as the ring bearer.  you might be a redneck if...)

i need INEXPENSIVE recs for:

1. florist--she wants her flowers to be real and the others to be fake
2. DJ
3. invitations (DIY?)

i don't know what else!  i feel so overwhelmed for her and of course the wedding crunch will be around the crunch for my master's thesis...grrr!  please help!!!!

Re: wedding questions

  • i know girls who have gotten healthy florals from Costco at a pretty decent cost.

also, Targets and Walmarts are carrying nice DIY invitations ... stick them in the printer and voila.  if you're crafty, rubber stamp something on them to personalize it.

not much info on DJs.  im not really a fan of the ipod DJ, but that's definitely an inexpensive route.

    good luck!

  • 1. Costco - I got my flowers from there and did my own.

    2. We had a band and it was $500 for 2-3 hours - I think.  Not sure how much a DJ costs. You could do with some nice speakers and a playlist on an ipod.  She could borrow those and it would be free.

    3. They have nice DIY invites at Michaels.  If you get the Sunday paper they always have 40-50% coupons.  I would go every week and buy something off of my wedding supply list.  I didn't pay full price for anything there Big Smile

Other things - I bought my gown, slip, and tiara off of ebay and saved a ton.  I went to bridal shops and tried on gowns and then shopped on ebay.  I also bought bridesmaid dresses on ebay.

  • I'm pretty sure I have 3 boxes (1 opened, 2 unopened) Wilton DIY wedding invitation kits (50 in each?). I wound up going a totally different direction with my invites and never used them.

I can find them tonight, take a picture, and email you. If they work, you can have them. I'll ship them to you. I'd rather someone use them then me sending them to goodwill.

  • miller, that would be AWESOME!!  my email is rswartswel at brynmawr dot edu.  heck, anything that anyone has leftover would be stellar!  i have a bunch of stuff from my wedding that i intend to give her, but since i got married in teh winter, she can't use a lot of my stuff :(
  • No problem. I'll send that over tonight. I get home around 7-ish so I'll probably send you an email after that.

    When is the wedding again?

  • I'll second Cosco for flowers.  A friend of mine did that for her wedding and they turned out great.  We just went the day before and picked out whatever was there that looked nice.  From there, it's easy enough to just tie up a bouquet.

Also, pp mention DIY DJing with an IPOD and some speakers.  The only thing to keep in mind if they are going to do this is that they might still want someone to MC. Not a huge deal, but some people forget about that part and have to find someone at the last minute to do it.

  • Dj-Tom Richards from the Rose. Last i knew he charge $300/4hrs. You can just leave a voice mail at the radio station since that's the same number he gives on his card. he'll do anything you want and will even buy the new music if he doesn't already have it. he also can make suggestions of the type of music to play and when and will MC as well.

Flowers, very easy to do yourself if you just ribbon tie them. BJs has 12-24 roses for $15. i forget exactly how many you get. or you can usually pick up loose carnations or daisys for pretty cheap. Usually if you order a dozen...or is it 2 dozen from Royers, you get a discount.

There is a bridal consignent in Leola right by Leola Village Inn. A fellow Knottie got some of her stuff there for dirt cheap. I also used Ebay for my headpiece, Goodwill for a crineline ( i still have and would be happy to just give if needed), Shoes were clearanced at Bon Ton....

  • Another option for flowers is a vo-tech school.  The brother of one of my friends is studying there to be a flourist and has designed bouquets for a few of my friends' weddings. http://www.cpavts.org/58819692110318/site/default.asp

  • I used a florist based in Middletown, Michelle Lutz, and she was really decently priced, her number is on the web if you search for her

As for invites, I have two boxes of print your own invitations - simple off-white, not a very fancy border that I bought at target on clearance and decided not to use, so if she'd like them, she can have them. I think I paid $5 a box, but I'd gladly just give them to you or her if you'd like. Email me at amt954@psu.edu if you want more info!

  • If you'd like to email me, I can send you some information for resources that I have for things that you've mentioned. I do wedding planning part time and have some contacts that might be helpful in addition to what the other girls posted above. I have the contact for the vo-tech that was mentioned above and my MIL works there so that may be a help getting your foot in a little faster.

No worries, just free advice and some phone numbers/email addresses for you! : )?

  • We did all of our flowers for $95 + the cost of florist tape, ribbon, and some pearl topped pins ~ $7-10.   - We had 1 bride, 4 bridesmaids, 8 boutonnieres, and 3 corsages.  We also had the extra flowers on the buffet tables and bar.   Flower girl flowers- were all of the dried ones that DH had given me in the 6 1/2 years prior to us getting married.

My MIL is crafty and did the flowers the morning of our wedding.

I ordered our flowers through https://www.farmstogo.com/s/home/home.php They were pretty good to work with.

  • I don't know how much of a budget she has for flowers, but Backwood's florist does them for very cheap also and they are beautiful.

  • DH's cousin had a wedding similar to this last summer.  They're hippies so they were in to tie dying shirts and things like that for the groomsmen.  Anyways, they picked flowers from a field the day before for bouquets.  You mentioned no tables are needed, does that mean there are tables already there for people to eat?  I definitely suggest tables even for a pig roast.  You can rent tables from a fire hall for pretty cheap.

I bought my invites at AC Moore I think for a pack of 50 it was less than $30.  They always have coupons too.
