Anyone give their dog Trifexis??? My vet put my dachshunds on this yesterday and I gave it to them about 10 last night. I haven't saw any side effects yet. I've been reading up on it this morning and now I'm freaking out. I've read alot of reports of it causing seizures and even death. I wish I would've read everything before I gave it to them because it would've never have entered their mouths.
Re: Trifexis?
Honestly I don't believe those reports the flea part of that medicine has been around a while and the most common side effect is upset stomach (so give it on food and no issue!) And the heartworm prevention is the same as what is in interceptor which is a long standing reputable product.
The Trifexis itself hasn't been out all that long so I also do not know how there are so many reports of this side effect.
Frankly I love the product I think it does well for both flea and heartworm prevention and its oral instead of topical.
Previously we were using Comfortis for fleas and Heartgard for HW preventative, but Comfortis was unavailable for our pointer mix's size so we went with Trifexis. I make sure to give it on a full stomach with dinner when I'm going to be around (as I do with any new med) and she's done well on it.
Our dachshund is still on the Comfortis/Heartgard combo because we still had Heartgard left and we were able to get the Comfortis.
The topicals do not keep the fleas away for us any more.
Wow I just reread my original post and it made me cringe a little so I thought I would clarify.
Trifexis is a drug and like ANY drug there are always a potential for side effects. Trifexis does say not to use the product in a dog that has a history of seizures. But like I was really trying to say in my first post I believe that it is a relatively safe drug. Although its new, the ingredients in the pill have been used available for use for quite some time without a significant trend of side effects. That is why I would feel comfortable using it. In fact if I didn't have to worry about ticks I would be using it in a heart beat!
A WARNING and response to all those about TriFexis.
I have two Yorkies. One is 3 lbs. and one is 5 lbs. TriFexis is NOT MEANT for dogs under the weight of 5 lbs. Please heed this warning.
My puppies were perscribed this medication by our original vet, whom we have not seen for several months now, because it was an ALL IN ONE pill. My puppies struggled with this medication. They had to eat before and not too much. The pill was difficult to give them. I would estimate almost 85% of the time they got this medication within a two hour time frame they were throwing up and feeling horrible.
My new vet explained that it is no wonder that the dogs have not experienced other problems by taking this medication at such a low weight. There is no telling the damage that it may have done internally to my precious dogs. Should anything happen to them the old vet will be having a meeting with my lawyer.
Please do not give your small dog this medication if they do not meet the weight requirement. If you see side effects like vomitting TRY ANOTHER MEDICATION! We are now on Revolution which is just as fabulous as TriFexis but you put it on their skin instead of giving a pill.
very true. I had forgotten about that..when we first got our shih-tzu I remember the vet telling us she was too small for it. They gave us a free sample pill meant for dogs under 5 pounds for the 1st month or 2 until she got to the weight requirement for Trifexis. So she has probably been on it the past 9-10 months. But she is 10 pounds now and moved on to the 10+ pound version of it and it has been great.
