I just moved into a new rental home. We love it and the living room has this very pretty fireplace. I don't know much about fireplaces but I love the way they look and I thought we may enjoy using it and decorating it, other then that I did not think much about it.
Anyways, Today it donged on me that the glass doors do not open. It has 4 panels of glass and little handles so it looks like doors but in reality they don't open. They have this gravel type stuff in the bottom of the fireplace and some logs (I looked through the glass) that I don't think is real wood in the grate so I'm assuming it is gas or electric.
It looks really nice but I was hoping to use it at some point so I was a bit disappointed and kind of assumed maybe the landlord put special doors on it so the tenant could not use it, but that seemed so odd for a home like this. I got online and saw some info about "fixed doors" on gas and electric fireplaces and this is a newer home so this could very well be the case.
I have no idea at all how to light it, what it really is, or anything. I inquired about the fireplace when looking at the home the first time and the person showing me was not really sure about the full info on it. We do have a random light switch near it that does not seem to do anything but now I wonder if it does something for this fireplace. Any guesses?
sorry I kind of rambled.
Re: Anyone know anything about fireplaces
I have a property manager and they had no idea when I asked them. They were a bit confused as well. They are supposed to call the landlord and find out for us, but so far have not got back to us so that is why I was wondering if anyone knew real quick. I'm sure they will get back to us next week.
And I can see the little gas pilot I think. I have tried the switch. I will see what the landlord says when they finally get back to us. Usually the property managers are very quick to respond and get stuff done, but maybe the actual landlords are out of town or something.
If you see a little soft blue light or flame - this is the pilot light. If you see that the gas is turned on. Also, many gas fireplaces take a few minutes to warm up.
Also, for your future reference the phrase is, "it dawned on me." Like the sun popped up in your head as it does in nature when it "dawns" or when dawn comes. "It dawned on me."
I have to say that made me laugh out loud. The word dong always makes me think of 16 Candles.
Long Duk Dong. Right? LOL.
Oh good God, who cares about her wording?
Our gas fireplace has a teeny tiny black switch down at the bottom left. I'm sure you've already looked, but maybe it's hidden somewhere? You might also want to get a carbon monoxide monitor just in case you ever do have a leak. It's nice peace of mind too.
Do you have gas hooked up to the home? If not you would have to have a tank outside the home. We had one for our gas fireplace and the gas delivery guy would fill it every now and then.
I'm going to assume here the pilot isn't lit. There should be a hidden switch to turn it on. Once the gas is connected and you got the pilot going the switch on the wall should work.
If you do not have a carbon monoxide detector, get one. I have a sensitive nose and could always smell the gas especially right after it is turned on and one time my ex fiddled with the setting and gas was leaking. I told him there was a problem and he didn't believe me until the alarm went off.
