Activities for the ILs + DS

So, my FIL and SMIL are coming on Saturday. They refuse to tell us what they'd like to do while they're here. All we have been able to pry out of them (and it was a battle to get this much) is that they're not into shopping and would like to spend time with DS.

Thing is, DS gets bored when he's at home. He prefers to be at daycare with a lot of kids and activities and outside time, so staying in the house for 4 days with them will only result in crankiness. I'm trying to come up with a list of things they can do and include DS that are out of the house.

So far, I've got a trip to RWP zoo and/or the playground there and the Providence Children's Museum. Anyone have a recommendation for a pumpkin patch, apple picking, or hayride type thing?

  • I like Adams farm in Cumberland.  It's great for toddlers.  They have goats and sheep that you can pet and feed, a small maze made out of bales of hay and pumpkins spread across ground like a patch.  It's also has a lot of open space for them to run.  I can't remember if they do hayrides.

Phantom Farms in Cumberland has apple picking and a small maze made out of burlap sacks.

Thanks! Adams Farm looks great. They do hayrides on weekends, so I'll encourage them to go on Sunday if that part interests them. I think DS would love to feed and pet the animals!

  • Not sure what your inlaws would be interested in doing, or what you'd like to do with Tynan. But, one of these might pan out for you -- http://www.rifamilyguide.com/activities.html

Good luck! Hope that you have a pleasant visit with your inlaws.

  • Thanks, everyone!

Last night, for some reason unknown to us, SMIL started texting DH about what she'd like to do and what she thinks FIL would enjoy, even though he won't say anything. So now we have a much better idea of what to do! I think we'll all go to Adams Farm on Sunday assuming the weather is nice, then send FIL and SMIL to Newport for a few hours on Monday to see the sights, then spend the afternoon with DS. And now we have a bunch of options for Tuesday so they can hopefully pick something they want!

I just wanted to add in that Phantom farms is all picked out of apples as of the end of September- so apple picking is out, but its still a fun place to go. We went to jaswells to apple pick- i highly suggest NOT going there witha  toddler, it would be a nightmare, there are SO many people

I agree with leebi i like adams farm. There usually aren't a lot of people there and tey have a small corn maze, pluse some sheep and chickens which would be fun for your son.

Another fun spot- if its not too far, is The Big Apple. You can watch them make the donuts, and there is a nunery up the street that sells fudge too.
