Thanks for the help- Decided on the Northeast

DH & I are going to be traveling to Providence, RI.  We are going to drive to Cape Cod, Boston and Newport.  Any good places to eat that you'd recommend or fun things to do at night?  We like sports bars or somewhere to have some drinks.  Is Newport somewhere you can spend a whole day at?  Just trying to figure out where to spend the night...may stay at all or just may visit and move on.

Thanks again for all the help!

  • Tour the mansions in Newport (especially Breakers).

In Boston eat at Ye Olde Union Oyster House.

  • Enjoy! There's lots of shopping, neat restaurants and bars in Newport. Plus, lots of historical stuff. I think you could easily make Newport a day trip, stay overnight, or  at least half a day trip. I remember liking a restaurant called I think H20 in Newport. That was a few years ago.  It was a bar-type place with a marina view, and it had a great lobster sandwich. You have to have a Lobster roll, steamers, and whole belly clams while you are in RI!  Newport has a lot of nice bars for night too. It is much easier to park and walk all around up and down the hilly streets and along the main street by the marina, than probably Providence unless you are right by Brown in Providence.

In Providence, there are bars, restaurants near Brown University, and  downtown Providence- which is like 5 minutes away.

I would probably pick Newport, but it depends on your taste and what you want to do.  I am sure you will find plenty to do either way.

     Have a good time!

  • This is my first time on this board and I am happy that the first post I saw was about my little state :)

You can absolutely make Newport a day, or overnight trip. I would tour the mansions, the Marble house and Breakers are my favorite. Do the Cliff walk for a bit, grab lunch downtown, then walk around all the little shops and spots on Thames street.

I would suggest the barking crab for lunch in Newport its newer and a lot of fun. For dinner, if you don't want seafood then you def. have to have italian at Sardellas! It is really good. I guess it depends on your budget but typical tourist spots range from the brick alley pub (which is a fun place but the food isnt amazing) to 41 north (upscale with a great deck/bar). If you are willing to splurge then you should go to the Spiced Pear. It is at the Chanler which is at the end of the cliffwalk. Or to Castle Hill.

In providence, I would suggest doing Thayer street (near Brown and Risd) and gradding lunch at someplace like Paragon or Andreas and even walking down to Wickeden. There our lots of dinner places. My favorites include Bravo, Gracies, The Dorrance (a bit pricey) or Jackies Glaxy (at waterplace park).

I don't necessarily think you need more than 1 day in Providence, but it will be much more accesible to stay there vs. staying in Newport-- you can hop the train for $7 to Boston right across from the State house, and its easy to hop on 95 to New York.

If you do stay in Newport, I suggest going to Wickford on your way to Providence, its another cute downtown with good restaurants and you can spend and hour ot two there.

If you need more suggestions, feel free to email me. Or you can even check out my wedding website (if its still up from last month) I wrote extensive amounts about wehre to go/where to stay/what to do because we had 50 guests coming in from out west. http://corvesehyde.ourwedding.com/?&cm_mmc=Affiliate-_-TheKnot-_-HPSearch-_-HPSearch

  • You have some great recs here:

Newport:  Some ideas are: mansion tours, shops, tennis hall of fame, cliff walk ...it's pretty quiet this time of year.  Two restaurant off the beaten path:  Salvation Cafe and Flo's Clam Shack.  Also, Bristol and Wickford are towns nearby that are also super cute to walk around.

Boston:  Everything you can imagine to do: museums, theater, a walk down Newbury Street or around Beacon Hill.  I recommend a tour of some kind because there is so much history.  The duck tours or trolley tours are great.  Go have dinner at the North End.  Walk around Fanuil Hall...great bars, stores, restaurants.
