should i do something about this

I was without my cell phone for the last week. ?I left my apt at 3 am, and when I got on the bus for the airport, I realized I was sans phone but didn't have time to go back to my apt and take a later bus.

Well, apparently, I did grab my phone, and it fell out in my car. ?It was at the park n ride lot for a week, and during that time, it was seamlessly broken into. ?Seriously, the alarm didn't trip, and I can't see where anyone broke in. ?And I know it was locked! ?I checked!

They took my cell phone which I know b/c there are 4 pages of calls from Tuesday which thankfully only add up to 140 minutes. ?Probably drugs with that pattern. ?They rifled through stuff, but thankfully they didn't take the only thing of worth which are my new ski boots. ?Well, the cell phone was new, and that's worth a fair amount, but not as much as those boots!?

So, should I report this? ?I don't think my phone will be recovered, but 4 pages of likely drug calls to a landline that's traceable (I looked it up, and there's a name and address. ?idiots) might be something they care about.?

Re: should i do something about this

  • I vote yes. As you said it might be something they care about. Wouldn't hurt to let them know.

  • Yes, report it.  My boss was stalked and my brother mugged, and they were able to catch both guys due to cell phone stuff.

Who knows, you might even get your phone back.

Glad the rest of your stuff was alright.

  • I vote "yes"

  • I would vote yes. If nothing else, if you have a police report, you might be able to get your insurance (autor or renters) to cover the cost of a new phone.

  • So, next question, how do I report it? ?That was my only phone! ?For the first time in my life, I decided not to have a landline. ?And for the first time, I've lost/broken a cell phone before I was eligible for the new ones for free. ?Grrr.

  • I'm not sure if I'd report it to the police, but I'd definitely report it to the phone company so they can deactivate the phone.

  • Haha, what a predicament!

I'd say walk in to the police station.  TTT might be able to shed a little more light on how easy that is to do. :)

  • My 6 week old cell phone was stolen back in June, so I know the feeling.  It totally sucks.  Thankfully we still had a landline at that time, so I was using that, but it's still a huge hassle.

I reported it to the police.  They didn't seem to care, but you never know.  Mine was definitely being used for drugs.  I had my cell calls forwarded to my landline for a day or two, and I was getting some seriously tweaked out people calling that number.

I got a cheap, $10 phone from Radio Shack that I used for a couple weeks until I figured out a replacement phone.   I had AT&T so I got a "Go Phone" - its the pay as you go types of phones, but they can activiate it on your existing phone number and you can keep your plan.  I'm sure other companies are similar.

     Good luck!

  • You don't have a phone at all?! That really sucks. Are you going to buy another one from your cell carrier? If not I'd do the prepaid cell thing like ESF suggested.
  • I have 2 samsung phones in Japan, but I couldn't get them unlocked to use here. ?I can buy an unlocked phone on amazon for about 30, so that's probably what I'll do. ?I really don't want to spend the prices that the carriers charge for replacement, especially when this one was less than 2 months old. ?At least I didn't really spend much money on it. ?I may do an interim pre-pay, I'm not sure. ?When the snow melts, the 2nd thing I'm doing is going to t-mobile. ?The 1st thing is getting the stupid summer tires from the car I bought in Phoenix replaced!

  • The prices are outrageous. I don't blame you.

Did you try begging your carrier for a discount? My H once dropped his brand new phone in the toilet and ruined it. They gave him a nice discount to replace it. he had to beg the sales guy but it worked!
