Need vacation recs

DH and I are planning a trip for mid-Nov.  We know there's not a lot of time to plan, but here's what we're looking for.

- Something special (this may be our last trip before starting a family), so nothing too close to home (NYC) or even Caribbean, where we've been several time and could easily do a long weekend there after kids

- we have 6 nights (we could take an overnight flight on the 7th night, so we can spend 6 full days somewhere), so it may not make sense to do something crazy like an African safari or Asia

- ideas have included everything from Paris (I've never been, but DH has) to hiking Machu Picchu (travel agent is looking into pass availability).

- we're not the type to rough it (sleep in tents, etc) but we don't need to stay in the Four Seasons, so somewhere moderate in price & luxury is fine

I know this leaves much of the world to explore, but what are your ideas?

  • Costa Rica

    Belize

    Peru

    St. Lucia

    Canada

  • What about something more exotic in Hawaii?  Last year we went to Kauai and did both the beachy nice resort for a few days in Poipu (Koa Kea Resort is amazing) as well as hiked up on the north shore and got a little dirty.  It was a very fulfilling yet exotic trip for us.
  • DH and I each picked at destination we wanted to visit before we had kids.  I chose Hawaii, and he chose Paris.  Both were fantastic trips.  When we went to France, we spent several days in Paris and then took the high speed train to Provence, which was stunning.  We stayed in a B&B, and it was like a mini vacation from our busy Paris vacation (where we did a lot of sight-seeing and tours).  We were there in May, and Paris was still pretty chilly, but Provence was warm and sunny.  It was the perfect way for us to split our time.

What about Santorini?  I wanted to go there for our upcoming 10-year anniversary, but we simply can not get away long enough to make it worth the long trip and time change.  I think there or somewhere in Italy would be a lovely pre-family trip.

Here's the B&B where we stayed in Provence:

It was wonderful--beautiful grounds, great breakfast, and the owner was so helpful in advising us on restaurants and activities.  She even invited us to accompany her to a piano concert at a nearby medieval-era church in the middle of a vineyard.  It was incredible.
