My husband and I were recently asked to be godparents to my nephew. My question is in regards to gifts. What have people done for their godchild on the day of their Christening and also what gift(s) should we be getting my sister and husband? Is there any traditions out there? I have already bought the baptism outfit.
I have never been a godmother and my sister and her family do so much for us and we are very, very close. I want to do it right. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Re: *Gift question*
I got my Godson a nice children's bible and some other bible books. I also got him a wooden cross with his name and baptismal date on it. Since he lives in TX and I live in MI and I don't see him very much, I also got him some clothes. I did not get anything for the parents.
Yea, I wasn't sure about the parents' gifts. Thanks for making it clearer. I will focus on my nephew :-)
All religious occassions for kids I get them a willow tree angel since they are pretty...not overtly religious (say the kid walks away from thier faith as an adult...this way it can still be meaningful to them) and they have them for pretty much all occassions.

I gave my god-daughter a savings bond. Will likely do the same (or contribute to her 529) for other religious events like her First Reconciliation, Communion, etc. No gifts for the parents (my sister and brother-in-law) and we are very close.
This is a great idea. They are so cute.

I gave my nephew a children's bible and a savings bond. I gave a more generous savings bond than I usually do, but it was not only my Godchild but my nephew as well).
I would not give a gift to your sister and her husband. It's not their Christening!!!
No gifts to parents - never hear of that before.
We send a card on each Baptismal "birthday" each year reminding the child of our place in their life and how we are praying for him/her.
LOL. I never even considered buying something religious for DH's niece for her baptism. Not sure how I missed this one.
I bought her stock. Not religious at all.
I guess I will try to be better godparents when she has her first communion.
