buying a washer/dryer set

Hi all, I know I'm a new face around here, but I was hoping you all could help me out a bit.  :)

We are in the process of renting out our house, which includes buying a washer/dryer set up.  MIL very generously gave us money to buy the set.  DH has a set picked out that he said he and his mom talked about but that set is significantly more expensive than the set that I was looking at.  The ones he is looking at will be about $1500 all said and done, the ones I'm looking at will be $1100 total.

I guess I just don't see the point in buying the best ones we can afford to put into a rental house that we are hoping to sell when the lease is up.  He says the ones he picked are highly rated on consumer reports.com.  The ones I picked are not "basic" by any means-they are middle of the road GE set (actually nicer than the used ones we have in our house now!).  I really think we need to save that $400 and put it toward other things in the house but I can't seem to talk DH into it.  His thought is "well, this is money we didn't have before anyway so we should just spend the total amount that we were given" to get the set.  (FWIW he and his mom both believe that if you're going to buy anything it should be top of the line or not at all-his dad and I both agree that while some things are worth the extra money not everything needs to be the 'best of the best' but I don't have time to enlist FIL's help before we need to buy) Any tips on how I can talk him into my view?  (Because we are going on the premise that I am right of course lol!)

Re: buying a washer/dryer set

  • If I were you, I would consider putting your old ones in the rental and keeping the new ones. That is what we did. Also, depending on your timeframe sometimes there are really good black friday deals on WDs. Good luck.

I definitely think this as well.  Tenants are hard on homes.  A lot of homes don't come with washer/dryers so it's a bonus at all they will even have one.  And black friday deals are a really good way to save!

  • Ikea has some awesome deals on washer/dryers in their clearance section. I wouldn't spend much on a set for a rental.

  • I agree with you, I would put some reliable appliances in the rental but I would not pay more money for the best (if that makes sense).
  • There is no way I'd put a nice set in a rental.  Don't most people have their own anyways?  I have never seen a rental that came with a set.  Unless you wanted to upgrade on YOUR set and put your old one in the rental I'd go with a basic energy efficient set.

no most people who rent (at least in most major cities) do not have thier own. Most people who rent either specificially look for places that have laundry already, or will go to the laundrymat. Why would a renter buy a washer/dryer when they don't know if thier next place is the same size or will even have hookups.

Anyways in response to the question, I would get a basic but functioning set for a rental. We rent out our basement and have stackable washer/dryer in there, I think we spent around 1400 because we wanted one with steel.metal parts (drum, shield etc)rather then plasic (which was around $1100) as plastic tends crack and therefor leak sooner and we don't want to have to replace it for a long time.

Or if you have the space, buy yourself some nice new ones and put what you are using in the rental. :)

  • Agreed. Having been on both ends of a rental agreement before, it will never seem like anyone will take as good of care of your things as you would.  Don't take the risk.

As for top of the line versus middle of the road, eh to me, anything beyond functionality and good quality is a waste of money.  Then again I am a cheapskate.  However, if the ratings and reviews of thes cheaper pair are nearly as good, then by all means save the money!
