Choosing a paint color for a china cabinet

Today I bought a buffet & hutch/china cabinet off of Craig's List for our dining room.  I have wanted to get something since we moved.  The piece I have there is too small and looks awkward in the space.  Here is the wall the buffet/hutch will go on:

(Please excuse the lunch mess on the table)

Here are a couple pictures of the buffet & hutch:

Now, for my question... what color should I paint it?  My plan is to repaint and change the hardware.  I am leaning toward a soft light sage green, which is basically the only accent color I have in the house (most everything is neutral).  I also have pillows with an orangeish print in the living room which is open to the dining room.

This is the type of green I like, and would match the green accents I have downstairs (wall color):

What scares me about choosing a green shade is that it will probably remain that color for the forseeable future.  MH says he will paint it once, and that's all.  lol  So if decide on green, I'm stuck with using a color palette that works with that downstairs for a good long time and I'm afraid to commit to color.

It seems safest to paint it white, like the buffet & hutch on the right here:

That way I wouldn't have to worry about getting sick of the color, and it would blend in.  The wall is white.  The opposite wall in the dining room is white, as well as the kitchen and hallway walls.  Would it be too much white?  The living room walls are beige.  Pretty much everything in the kitchen/dining room/living room - which is the open area where this will be smack dab in the middle - is white, beige, or brown.  I feel like the area needs a little bit of color to "spice it up", more than just a kitchen towel or throw pillow.

The other option is to paint it black, I like the look of this: hutch-LG+035.jpg

Our dining room table is black.  However... this is a pretty big piece (6ft wide by 7ft tall) and I'm afraid the black will make too big of a statement and just be too much.

I don't want to paint it a shade of beige, or a wood stain.  I want it to be white, black, or a color (probably green or orange).

Re: Choosing a paint color for a china cabinet

  • I am looking for a project exaclty like this one. I like the idea of doing a vintage white color with bright colored dishes to make it pop.  If you plan on keeping it the same color, definitely go with something that can match anything if down the road you change the color scheme.  BTW, gorgeous cabinet.  I defintely see the potential that it has
