A number of years ago I began riding in charity bike rides. In 2006 I completed 40 miles in my first ride for the LiveStrong Challenge in Denver, and the following year 70 miles in Philly. Both experiences were profound, exhilerating, inspiring, and punishing. But well worth the pain, because I knew that I was doing something good to help those with cancer. I was off the bike for a years (due to an injury) and last year (2011), I completed a 50 mile ride for MS. I had always said "one day, I am going to ride in the PanMass Challenge."
I've been putting it off now, for what seems like forever. I finally decided I'm just going to do it. They have a number of route distances, but they are known for the two day ride (Boston area to Provincetown, 192 miles). My goal is a one day ride route of 84 miles. And hopefully in the future I will be able to do the two day ride.
I'm excited that I made this decision, but feeling slightly overwhelmed by the distance and the amount of training. When I rode for MS, there were moments when I really wanted to just quit. I'd hit that proverbial wall. But I couldn't. Those who have a serious illness, like MS or cancer, can't quit. So, I ride.
Anyway. Thought I would share this with you all. Does anyone else have a big challenge coming up?
Re: A Challenge
I'm so proud of you!! Which route are you doing? I am crossing fingers that you'll be at either Sturbridge, MMA, ,or P-town, so I might get a chance to meet you
Or, maybe at PMC day at Fenway?? Okay, enough of me being selfish!
The whole experience is amazing, and inspirational, and touching. You will not regret being a part of the PMC.
It's seriously one of H's and my favorite weekends of the year.. I'm so happy that you've decided to join the fun! It's worth the work and the fundraising. I promise!

I was thinking of the Wellesley-Bourne route (which is Saturday, one day) and is 84 miles. The Sturbridge start sounds way more challenging than I think I am up for. But, I think I would like to volunteer on the 2nd day and be in Ptown.
I remember my first ride for LiveStrong and I was blown away by how inspirational it was. Every time I thought about quitting, I just kept pushing, knowing those who survived are riding in this too. And this is one reason I keep doing it. The second year I did it Lance was there and I even saw him out on the course. I was riding alone, and there he was, going the opposit direction, powering up a hill. (Regardless of controversy, it was cool and I still like him).
We don't have to wait until August to meet! I know you're in CT, but not sure how far away. Anyway. Thanks so much for the support
That's awesome!! Good luck training, I'm sure it'll be really tough, but totally worth it.
The company I used to work for would sponsor an MS ride in SC. I never rode, but I would make food/snacks for the pit stop.

Congratulations on making this decision that will help and inspire others.
My boss freaquently does 50+ bike rides throughout the year. Tends to slow down in the winter time here! He always says they are a lot of fun, but also a huge undertaking. I am so impressed that you are doing this. I can't imagine riding 84 miles, impressive!
My mom and I do a couple marathons throughout the summer. One is for CASA and one is for a local charity to support children. Since I'm not able to have children, I do as many fundraisiers as I can to support acitivies and orgnaizations dedicated to youth. Love doing them...hate dealing with the pain afterwards.....but so worth it!
That's great! It certainly sounds challenging! I can't imagine riding 84 miles. You've got a great attitude about it, I'm very impressed!
Have fun!
