New York--Anyone know...

Hi friends,

H and I recently moved to DE and since we're so close to New York city, we decided it would be the cheapest to travel there than any other time. We haven't figured out all the logistics quite yet, but we're considering going for our 1st anniversary. Has anyone gone and stayed in a reasonably priced hotel that you would recommend?  We're hoping to stay in Manhattan--near 7th and 28th street where the megabus will drop us.

Thanks girls!

Re: New York--Anyone know...

  • We went a few years ago and I did a travel package including broadway show and it wasn't that bad...google deals online NYC usually has something you can do. We stay at the Roosevelt and it was just amazing!

  • I would try looking at Kayak.com (or your favorite travel site) at hotels near Penn Station. Although keep in mind that NY has great transit options, even if you don't feel comfortable with the subway you can splurge and use taxis.

  • Sorry I can't help you ... never been, but boy I want to!  My sister also lives in DE and you just made me so sad and I want to be there right now...

We are planning a trip out there next year and NY is on our bucket list so let me know what you come up with.  I know she usually takes the train up there when she and her H go.  I know they drove up there once and said that was the biggest mistake they could have made.  Seems to me she has stayed at the "Roosevelt" I think...

  • Can't help you specifically, but I use hotels.com all the time and you can search for hotels closest to a certain address.  Between that and tripadvisor.com, you should be able to find a hotel where you want, for the price you want, and with good reviews =]

  • I don't know about new york, but around here the best couple night deals are always on living social. Theres almost always a 2nights for one or half price deals at some of the even more expensive hotels around....so maybe start checking that.
  • i went for my 21st bday (7 years ago) and stayed at the Chelsea Star hotel.  I really like it.  They have rooms with private baths, and they also have hostel style rooms with shared baths.  I stayed in the shared bath room because it was cheaper and I was in college and I really didn't mind.  The place was pretty nice, all the rooms were painted different themes, so that was cool.  It's in the Chelsea district which I knew nothing about but ended up really liking, it's artsy.  Of course, it's been a while, so I'm sure it's probably all changed now.
  • i have also stayed at Chelsea star but this was about 3-4 years ago...and it was kind of scary. Maybe things have changed ???

The room we had, the bed was really unstable. my friend leaned on it and it almost fell over. My best friend and i stayed there one night so we could go see Wicked.

They didnt have any sort of comforter to sleep with, just a thin blanket. the tv was a 13 inch tube tv on a dresser that didnt even work.  The place was very artsy..i will give it that...but there is also has a hostel section where its community living ...a bunch of bunk beds in a room and shared bathroom amenities which weirded me out. we didnt stay in the hostel section we stayed in the regular hotel. I stayed in a hostel before in Puerto Rico too. But for the money it was okay for a nights stay at the hotel. I have stayed a bunch of other places in the city. Most are small and about 300 a night easy. you may want to look around the outskirts of the city and then take a train in. You may save a ton doing it that way too. Im about an hour from there otherwise id say come stay with me ....LOL!!! Although i am still not closed yet on the house. LOL  I will call my house Donna and Martys bed and breakfast. :-)
