I really hate substiute teaching. I know it will get my foot in the door and it is the best way for me to get a permanent teaching job but I really hate it for the following reasons.
1. I have to "search" for available jobs on a website. Most of the time it says, "No jobs available." I have to sit at the computer (because I don't have a smart phone) and refresh over and over until a job shows up. Last night I was so sick I went upstairs to bed early and DH refreshed for me for over two hours. He finally found me a job around midnight.
2. Subs get treated like crap. On Monday the secratary didn't know where to put me. She told me to "sit down" then she said, "just go out into vestible and open up the door for people." She left me there for 20 minutes and finally the superientendent saw me and found me a spot for me.
3. Not being sure that I will work the next day is very unsettling. I love to plan things out. I can't with this kind of job.
4. Every school has different start times and end times.
5. I don't have my "own" students.
(Thanks for letting me vent.)
Re: The joy of subbing
I agree with all 5 of these!
The refreshing sucks! Can I recommend an Ipod touch or other small device? It lets you access the internet without the cost of a data plan. Of course, it is only in wifi spots, but it works great at home. I would not have gotten the subbing job I had without it.
I also hate not being able to plan things out, and it is a shame that subs are treated so badly.
I really want an ipad, but can't really afford it. Was thinking of a Kindle but why get one of those when I really want an ipad? I'm hoping my parents can splurge and get the ipad for me for my upcoming birthday.
