What are you reading?

I have been struggling to get into anything since I finished the Harry Potter books back in August.  I downloaded Outlander and have yet to start it but I'm going to try this weekend.

I'm still waitlisted for Gone Girl and now for Casual Vacancy, JK Rowling's adult book.

Re: What are you reading?

  • I love Outlander! I've read the first two books so far. I've been on the nest book club a lot and am taking part in their Fall Book Challenge so I've been reading more books that I normally wouldn't have. It's been fun!

For FBC I'm currently reading Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble and recently I've read The Baker's Daughter, My Horizontal Life, Life of Pie and They Call Me Creature (a R.L. Stine book that was actually really fun to go back and read since I loved his books as a kid).

I'm number 7 on the waiting list for Casual Vacancy, though it is getting horrible reviews. I've hear mixed reviews about Gone Girl so I'll be interested to hear what you thought of it.

  • I need some book recs too...I haven't used my kindle in over a month b/c I don't know what to read!

The last thing I read was the Divergent series (well the first two books that are out). I've seen Gone Girl recommended a lot. I might add that to my library list.

  • 0602 - do you borrow from the Abington library on your kindle? I need an idiots guide for how to do this.

I just read The Perks of Being a Wallflower bc I wanted to finish it before the movie came out. Read it in 4 days. It was a really easy read and I really liked it.

  • I too go through phases where I can't get into reading.  I just started a pregnancy and childbirth book recommended by my doctor.  I guess it's about time I learned something about this stuff!

Do they use Overdrive? It's so easy, search for what you want and follow the links. You end up on Amazon and it is very similar to buying a book. You don't need to plug in your kindle to the computer or anything. It is delivered wireless through Whispernet.

This! This! This!  OH and Kernal as a PA resident, you can request a Philly Library card and take advantage of their online library system too.  For really popular books, I hedge my bets and request the books on both sites so I have a better shot at getting it faster.
  • esyn I loved the Divergent series and can't wait for the 3rd book!  I hope they make them movies because I think they'd translate really well.

NQ - You are not a dork!  I have to be better about updating my Goodreads!  I lurk on NBC occasionally and I'd love to jump in to their seasonal challenge but it seems so overwhelming!

You can also get a library card in the township you work in (for people that live and work in different towns).

  • Ok here are the Overdrive instructions I've been circulating to people haha!  Anybody with better advice, feel free to correct me!

    For Montgomery County: http://montcolibs.lib.overdrive.com/

    For Philly: freelibrary.lib.overdrive.com

You just need your library card and a pin number.  You search and place a hold for a book based on your device.  Once the book comes in, you'll get an email telling you it's available.  You have to get it through the web.  At least, that is the case for me because I have a Kindle Touch that doesn't have a 3G internet connection.

It will guide you to Amazon.com and it should deliver the book just as if you've bought one from the site.

Don't be intimidated! I'm pretty sure I won't be able to complete the challenge (I do also have a life, a job, a sick husband and I am not by any means a fast reader). But there are plenty of people that don't finish so it's more of a personal challenge to see how far I can get. It has just encouraged me to find more time to read and to read a wider variety of books. It also helps me narrow down what book to read next since it needs to fit into one of the categories. One of the members creates a nice little excel sheet so it's easy to keep track of where you are.

  • I also love the Divergent series and can't wait for book 3.  I loved it more than Hunger Games.

I am currently reading the 5th Outlander book - The Fiery Cross.  They have all been really good but this one is super suspensful!

  • I too haven't been on my kindle for over a month.  The last book I read was Gone Girl.  Very good.  It kept me up at nights with the suspense of what was going to happen next.
  • Total side note...I really want the Kindle Paper White!

  • I didn't realize book #3 of the Divergent series wasn't out when I started reading...I probably should have waited to read all 3 at once. It was killing me not to have that 3rd book! And I agree it could make a great movie!

My curiosity got the better of me and I went to the author's blog.  Yay!

I agree with this entirely.  It was this series that started me on the habit of checking for release dates of sequels.  I read the first about 6 months before the 2nd was released and now I'm waiting for the 3rd.  I'd die if it became a movie!

  • I just finished Murdered by Mumia by Maureen Faulkner and Michael Smerconish.  It is so sad what that poor woman has gone through.  It definitely is  not an objective view of the case, but I am familiar with all the facts of the case and had made up my mind long ago

I really want to read the Divergent and Outlander series, but there are so many holds ont hem at the library.  I also want to read Silver Linings Playbook, the movie is coming out and I saw the author on the news this am.  The movie was filmed in and around Philly and stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence

Wow, quite a resurgence in popularity for Outlander since the first book was written in 1991!

I know!  I am super excited about it. Did you read on her we page that the books are in the process of becoming a mini- series?!

NO! But that is amazing...crap, I wonder if I'll have to get my cable back?! I've only read the first two books. They are so long, I needed to take a break between book 2 and book 3.

  • Just finished the Hangman's Daughter?  I'd give three stars and a meh.  Wasn't great, wasn't terrible.

    Not sure what's up next.
