s/o online buying sites- ebay question

DH put some video games on ebay the other day that he doesn't play anymore.  One of them that sold this morning was paid for by the buyer through Paypal about 15 minutes after the auction ended.  Then about an hour later, I got a message from the seller saying "I'm sorry. I purchased this in error.  Can you please issue a refund if you having shipped it yet?"

I looked at the bidding history and this guy only bid once.  I can understand "accidentally" bidding and hoping to be outbid but how to you explain "accidentally" paying for the item?!

What would you do?  It's not a ton of money or anything but if I offer the refund, I still have to pay ebay listing fees and then paypal costs for transferring the money.  Would you give a refund less these costs?  Give a refund for 1/2 the money?  Full refund?  No Refund?

Re: s/o online buying sites- ebay question

  • I'm guessing he meant maybe he thought the game was a different game than it was and he realized later?? Not that he accidently went to PayPal and transfered the $$

Did you specify in your eBay listing if you accept returns? If you did, I would return him the money. If not...I dunno. I guess maybe refund him the money less the fees you will incur? But really, if you said "no returns" on the listing, you could just refuse to give him a refund if you want.

  • I'm pretty sure there is an option of "purchaser changed mind" on eBay so you won't have to pay the fees.  Same goes for PayPal.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Yes- "No Returns" was specified.

Thanks Jade for the tip...I'll have to look tonight when I'm home to see if I can find what you're talking about.

I really don't even mind the whole refund part.  What I think is crazy is that you don't just "accidentally" pay for something if you didn't want it.

  • Also, as an alternative to selling games on Ebay, my DH sold his old games (and some recent ones that he finished playing) back to Best Buy.  They typically give you 50% of the current retail price back and sometimes they run a special where they give you 100%.  DH got like $300 in Best Buy money to use.  He had ALOT of games Stick out tongue

Ditto this. I would be nice and give him his money back then just re-list the game, no money lost for either party.

  • We refunded.  It was way easy to do once I was on my laptop and had the full site.  I've been using the mobil app and you can't do it from there so once we moved past those frustrations it was a piece of cake!
