Anyone done a West Coast road trip?

Since it's slow... We're looking to plan a trip from San Francisco to Seattle next year and we want to start figuring out where we'd like to start. We know we also want to stop in Portland but we're pretty open to other cities. Any recs for cute little towns, national parks, etc.??? TIA!

Re: Anyone done a West Coast road trip?

  • A few years ago we flew into San Francisco and drove to San Diego.  Not the whole west coast, but it really was a beautiful drive on the California coast.  If you have a few extra days maybe you can fly into San Diego and drive up the entire coast!  I wish we would have had more vacation time so that we could have visited more than San Francisco, LA, and San Diego.  I know there are alot of great national parks on the coast.  I would imagine you cant go wrong with stopping at any of those.

  • Are you set on that itinerary? I have recs for places just south of San Francisco, if you are interested.

Carmel is absolutely gorgeous.  Cute shops, art galleries, cool architecture, etc.  I think it's about 2 hours south of SF.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park is amazing.  The giant redwoods are reason enough to go but the activities are endless. Hiking, horseback riding, exploring caves, etc.   Only drawback is that it is about 4 hours south of SF.

When I went in high school, we drove from San Diego to San Francisco.  I love San Diego/La Jolla but that is probably way to south for you!

San Francisco is one of my favorite cities.  I've been a few times but never made it to Alcatraz, which is on my bucket list.   I would definitely try to stop in Napa if you can.  Another place on my bucket list :)

  • My brother lives in Seattle and he and his FI go down to Cali quite often.  I'm thinking they primarily fly but I know they have driven it from time to time.  I see if I can get some recs.

Have you been to Seattle?  It's gorgeous!  There are some little spots outside the city that are worth checking out but I don't know the names.  I'll see if I can find out.

Also, try paging Brittany ?? on the Seattle board.  She moved out there a few years back from Baltimore and I think she's active on that board but I'm blanking on her SN (she may even lurk here too!).  I can get in touch with her on FB too if you want.

  • It's so random that you posted this.  We've been talking about planning a road trip from Seattle to San Francisco next year - hopefully in October.  I'll be following any recs you get!

  • We did a mini road trip earlier this year since I had to go to San Francisco for work.  From San Francisco, we made stops in Sausalito and Muir Woods on our way to Napa.  After Napa, we drove to Monterey and Carmel.  I really wanted to try and hit Yosemite but it didn't work out.

We had a great time and I wish we would have spent more time in Napa.  I have to go back to California next month, and I'm trying to convince DH that we need to go back to Napa...

  • Thanks for all the tips! I would love to go to Napa too but I'm not sure if we'd be able to fit all this in in one trip.
