So this Sunday I am hosting a few friends over to "catch up" outside of weddings and showers etc.
It's going to be about 7 of us total...and two of those are pregnant (i did some reading up on what they can and can not eat).
I'm trying to come up with some new app ideas but keep a kind of "fall" theme going while still having a cohesive menu. Any ideas on what I can make for a heavy app selection....
My ideas so far:
sage chicken skewer
Then some veggies with hummus and a roasted red pepper dip selection
and so far the the only other thing I know I am making for sure are pumpkin Cheese yougart cakes..which are basically low fat mini cheesecakes, made with nilla wafers and that we will be having Cider (DH is in charge of that)
I want to use up some of the filo dough shells I have (the tiny little bowl like shells) but don't want to do my usual caprese salad in a cup. Any ideas what to do with these?
Also, I want everything to be quick and easy!
plus a bonus is if you can think of something small to serve off of these cute little tasting plates I just got that are about 1.5" square!
Re: Cohesive Menu for this weekend
You can put any salad into a little cup, if you just deconstruct it, or cut the components small enough. Or, maybe individual baked brie bites? I've seen recipes for cranberry or apple baked brie... Don't see why the mini shells wouldn't work.
oh thanks for the link to the thread. They are giving me a lot of ideas with cranberry and there was a sauce on there with cranberries for meatballs. I might pick up two bags of those perfect cooked meatballs (they are buy 1 get 1 at daves and i have $1 off coupon) and make the sauce.
I forgot to mention, two of the girls coming are pregnant and the last one is allergic to nuts- what a group! lol.
Otherwise I have a great baked brie i do with pastry dough and walnuts and brown sugar.
thanks I didn't realize this I thought all soft cheese was a no-no. I know one of my girlfriend won't eat anything "off book" she is a nutritionist and already really insane about what she eats, so now that's she pregnant its been lots of the same things for her. But my other gf is a bit more open.
I am going to maybe try the brie in those cups with some cranberry chutney on top and without the nuts. I think that is very "in the season'
That thread had me drooling!
Definitely this. I'm a nut about the "rules" for pregnant women - but if you tell me that you were aware and bought pasteurized cheese, I'd be very happy. It's so sweet of you to consider all of their needs!
And, make what you'd like to some extent. So long as you have a few things each person can eat, there's no need to jump through hoops to insure everyone can eat everything. You're being very thoughtful as it is!
Since you're doing sage chicken skewers, and something with cranberry, how about some apple cranberry sage bites? Ties in with the other flavors and gives you a chance to include yummy in-season apples. http://www.acouplecooks.com/2011/09/apple-cranberry-sage-bites/
Or mini dishes of apple crisp. Or slices of apple with a carmel dipping sauce.
This was a bad thread to read at 9am.... mmmmmmmmmmmm
Oh those are a great idea. I think that might be what I make for my mini fillo shells, instead of using the crackers.
I have a long shopping list for the market tonight!!!
