Any tips for potty training? Good reads?

So I never wanted to start pt before 2 but the little lady seems to have other plans.

She's been peeing on the potty for a little over a month and poops on it occasionally. It's always voluntary - we never push but we offer to put her on it when she looks like she has to go. But we always put her on it before she goes to bed and that's cut down on her overnight diaper leaks big time.

I'm not sure what to do when we go out though. Like yesterday we were in Target and she told me she had to go - she said "Mommy, pee pee potty?" But she's never gone on the potty anywhere else but on her little potty at home so she just ended up going in her diaper. This is totally fine with me but I don't want to confuse her by saying 'go in your diaper' when she wants to go on the potty. And  I feel like she's not going to want to go on the big toilet in a public place.

Any suggestions?  I'm a little unsure how to proceed bc I wasn't planning on doing it this early. I could use some tips and/or if you have any reading suggestions I'd appreciate that as well.

TIA.

  • Also, should I be switching to pull ups? i have no idea about this stuff...

  • my biggest fear about pting is i hate public restrooms in places like target that aren't kept up. i can't go in them without gagging.

that being said m this summer would tell me when he pooped/had to poop. but he stopped so i stopped with trying to catch it (basically he HATES getting a diaper change and realized he told me then BAM he get's changed). he has pooped/peed on his little potty a couple times before bath and knows we plop his poop in the big one after he goes in his diaper he waves goodbye and we flush it. that's all i got.

  • Tried potty training Tommy a month ago and it didn't go so well.  I used a stool and a potty seat that sits on our toilet.  When he gets better at it, I'm going to invest in this for public toilets

  • That's kind of a neat idea. I'd be interested to see it - it looks like the folds might pinch their little heiny though.

I have a Bjorn potty that she loves and I just bought a nice potty seat that sits on our toilet to get her used to that. She just went pee and poop on it before her nap so maybe this might not be as big of a deal as I'm making of it.

  • Sounds like she's doing great!

We've ran into the public bathroom issue several times.  I've tried to just have her balance on the big seat while I'm holding her...that was a bit fat fail.  She doesn't want me touching her, and if it's a U shaped seat, it's impossible.  I've had to tell her a couple times sorry, just go in your diaper. :(  I just added this to a kohls order I was using a 30% off code on: http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-488590/disney-princess-folding-potty-seat-by-ginsey.jsp

I have no other advice.  We are basically doing what you are doing.  We aren't pushing it yet, but we just offer it to her, and she'll tell us she has to go sometimes.  Granted half the time she tells us as she's going so it's too late...but who knows.

  • potty training is the bane of my existence right now.  DD was doing great with it right before DS was born, and then totally regressed- I mean she went from almost trained to being smug and proud when she'd poop her pants.

Currently, she goes back and forth.  Some days she does great, and others she fights and kicks and screams when we ask if she has to pee.  Just today, she peed on the potty for me 3 times, requested 'real' underwear (I have her in pull-ups), so I put it on her- and she within 5 minutes went 'MOMMY I HAVE TO GO POTTY!' as pee poured down her legs onto the carpet in her room.

Side note- I watched a video sent by Pull-Ups and they said once you go to Pull-Ups you shouldn't go back to regular diapers because it sends mixed signals.  But Pull-Ups get pricey- and she isn't consistent- and I have a huge box of diapers unopened in the basement.  Anyone have thoughts on that- is it true I shouldn't go back or is it just Pull-Ups trying to extort $$$ from me?

  • I think Pull-ups in general send mixed messages - I would avoid them totally.  When you make the switch go right to underwear and just be prepared for accidents.

I remember once when we were pt'ing Charlie and he was playing in the sandbox.  He asked me if he had on Pull-ups or underwear.  He had to go, but didn't want to stop playing, and if I told him he had a pull-up on he would have just gone in that

The only thing we use Pull-ups for is overnight, which is normal. Charlie still uses them, I have heard not to worry about it, just wait until he starts waking up dry

  • We were not really going to starting potty training just yet but I'm going to go out and get a potty soon. Danica has been coming up to us for the past month and says, "Maaa-maaa poooo. maaa-maaa poooooo-poo" as she's pooping in front of us. I'm not going to push it but if she's letting us know that she's going, I may as well start getting her used to sitting on the potty with her diaper off.

The public bathroom stuff sucks. Boys are so much easier in that they can just point and shoot to pee but to poop, it was always such a PITA. I would cover the seat like a maniac and would waste probably a 1/2 a roll of toilet paper. I'd cover the seat and make sure it draped down the sides and I'd also drape the TP down the front down to the floor. Of course my son takes after my husband and has to take a sh!t everywhere we go. I don't know what it is about restaurants but the minute we sit down, he's gotta take a sh!t. Drives me crazy.
