Suggestions for calming nerves during public speaking....

I started a new job one year ago that has a huge public speaking element to it.  Historically I have been TERRIFIED at public speaking but thought this is great job opportunity for professional and personal growth.  While I have adjusted more than I ever thought I would and have grown tremendously I still get pangs of anxiety leading upto or during a presentation on occasion.  If any one of you share that fear what has helped you in the past refocus during a speaking engagement to shake off those nerves?  Its odd b/c some days I do great and others, I get all of those nasty little anxious symptoms.

Re: Suggestions for calming nerves during public speaking....

  • I guess it depends on what it is. I am also terrified of public speaking and recently I had a job where I needed to speak in front of a court room. The good part was that I was pretty much reading a script, so I practiced the lines over and over and over. I read them aloud at home to my parents and boyfriend and asked for feedback. I never totally got over the fear, but remembering the lines like the back of my hand helped a LOT. I would also take a sip of water and a deep breath before I'd need to speak. Oh, and I'd also make cue cards that I could secretly glance at in case I forgot a line or word or got flustered. Actually, at one time I did get flustered and froze mid way though a line, but I just took a deep breath and kept going... no one seemed to really notice or care. I think also the main thing to remember is that the people you're speaking in front of are only people and probably have the same fears you do.
