Apartment Question

Hi. .

We are going to look for apartments, but I am unsure what to ask. I know to ask if they flood (just to confirm because I did research and they don't), and to ask what is included in the rent. Do you guys think that $1,200 is a good price? The apartment is close to the college I go, his job, the bus (I still do not have a car), shop rite, and many other things.

 Thanks for the replies.

Another thing..was is renting really better -money wise-then buying a house? I am only saying because at first that is what we considered, but maybe it would be better to just get the apt and take a few hours to save for the house.

Thanks again.

Re: Apartment Question

  • I do not know where you live so I do not know if $1200 is a good price or not.

    Things to ask -

What is included in the rent?

What utilities do I need to turn on?

    What are the application/admin fees?

    What is the deposit?

Is the flooring new or hold old is it?

How easy is it to get someone to fix any issues that you may have with the place?

Renting is better than buying when you do not have a large nest egg already built up.  Home buying is very expensive and you have continued maintenance costs.  When you rent you do not have to worry about fixing anything.  You just get to live there and enjoy it.

Good luck on your apartment search!

  • in NJ. The area is wayne.
  • Renting price wise, it completely depends on your area, if you don't know if its good or not i suggest doing some more craigslist searching or talk to friends who rent because it completely depends where you are, what kind of building it is, what amentities are around etc. Around here mostly residential most 1 bedrooms are about 750 including utilities, 20 minutes away next to rapid transit in a newer building we were paying 1,200 a month not including utilities and that was a good price for that area....so it really depends

As far as renting vs. buying...it depends on how much you have saved up, how long you plan on being in one place, and what the market is like in your area at any given time. We bought when it was a 'buyers market', lots of houses available driving the prices down, and we waited until we had our 20% down and H has a stable job in the area so we know we will be here for a while. We also bought a 3 bedroom home, so even if we have some suprises....we can still be here for a while.

Honestly call or talk to a real estate agent, I know most will be willing to talk with you about the market and your options since it could provide business for them down the road if not right away.
