we just bought our first house in April and I'm wondering how much oil a typical home uses each winter? We have an 80 gal tank and if we fill it soon, should that last us the whole winter? We won't be using a fireplace or any other source of heat
Thanks
Re: if you have oil heat
This can vary quite a bit depending on a few things. How large is the house? How old is it? Is there insulation in the walls? Are the windows newer/older? How many zones are there - do you have programmable thermostat(s)? Is someone home all day, or only in the morning/night? Is the water also heated with oil? How warm do you like to keep the thermostat at?
Did you get the history for heating costs for your home when purchased? The more energy efficient the home, the less it will cost.
Natural gas is the cheapest heating - is it not available? Could you convert your current furnace to gas?
I do think your tank size is incorrect.
A typical, standard size tank is 275 gal. We built our home in 06, 3200 sf with 5 heating zones. We usually fill our tank 2 times per year - although if we have a very cold winter, I'll keep the heat cranked and that'll increase to 3x.
