Issue at work, would love advice!
I have been a waitress at my restaurant for four years. 95% of the staff smoke (waitresses, bartenders, managers, ect.) Me and I think one other girl are the only ones who do not smoke. Now, of course smoking is illegal indoors at restaurants, however, when the night is over and 2am hits the managers light up cigarettes, bartenders, DJ, bouncers, the whole place is filled with smoke. This is a HUGE issue for me as not only do I not smoke, but when I smell it I feel sick to my stomach.. not to mention breathing in second hand smoke is HORRIBLE for you. I have said something to the manager... who of course... is a smoker. I was so fed up tonight that I told him I was leaving (we are supposed to get the ok from him first) I was infuriated, there were so many people smoking while me and the other servers were trying to clean. The manager doesn't get it, he even said to me with a smirk on his face, well you are a person who doesn't smoke. If I went to the owner (who is basically never around) she would not care because she herself is a smoker and when she does come into the restaurant to eat... SHE HERSELF will smoke, and sometimes there are still customers in the place! I don't know what to do. Maybe get a note from my doctor saying I cannot be near any smoke??! There are two sides to the restaurant, and usually one has more smoke than the other. Do I go to the board of health? Now, if I do end up doing something everyone will know it is me and my life won't be so great at the restaurant. Also, I only work twice a week so people may say I am barely around and how can I make their lives miserable, and so on. I legitimately told the manager tonight that I was so sick to my stomach and this wasn't ok and he didn't even care. It just puts me in such an awful mood when I leave there, I stink and I am bitter toward the people who smoke. There was this guy there tonight, come to think of it I had no clue who he was, maybe a friend of the DJ, but he kept lighting up cigarettes and he was blowing it near me so when I needed to use windex I sprayed it close to where he was standing without warning him. He made a comment to me about making him sick and I said, welll now we are even because your cigarette is making ME sick! UGH! I would never be so rude like that but this is just so not alright. Please help! Sorry for the rant, I am just so pissed off about this. It happens to me every time
I have to stay until closing of the restaurant.

You have every right to be upset. First your manager is not being a good manager because he isn't caring about all his employees. Secondly, your health is compromised. Third, you are in a hostile environment where people are making it difficult for you to do your job.
You certainly have a complaint.
However, you have to decide something...is going to war over this worth it?
You can look for another job. Or, can you ask you manager to not have people stop smoking but to have them avoid certain areas so you can at least have some cleaner spaces to be in. I think that's fair.
Ultimately, they don't care about this issue, or you for that matter. I am sorry to say that. But, while you figure out what to do here in this situation, I do think you should seek employment elsewhere.
And, after you leave perhaps then report the restaurant to whoever it is in your state/county that handles these things. Or, call the local media. This is a huge health issue - studies are finding that there is something called third hand smoke which is a major issue and I think is actually sad to be more unhealthy than second hand smoke. Third hand smoke AFFECTS CUSTOMERS.
Here is a Wiki link. You should look for info on your local board of health too.
