washing baby clothes (** Tara**)

I got a lot of baby clothes at the shower and I'm assuming I need to wash those even though they are new?

I also went to a consignment sale today and bought some there, obviously I need to pre-wash those. What do I need to wash them in? We use free and clear detergent any way, is that ok or do I need to use something just for babies?

Tara - you mentioned once that you know a way of making your own laundry soap? Do you mind sharing that with me?

Thanks ladies!Big Smile

  • You will need to wash everything, even new items. You never know how long something sat in storage or where it was kept in the store before purchasing. You can alway just wash some of the smaller sized stuff to start with, and wash the bigger stuff when she needs it.

You can use free and clear. We use that now, although I used Dreft for the first 6-8 months because I absolutely love the smell!! It just smells like new baby to me!!

Pretty much everything lynette said. We used dreft in the beginning and then switched to tide free and clear which I use for all of us. I still wash everything Katie gets, just because I have no idea where the clothes were before buying them.

  • Do you like liquid detergent or powdered detergent?  I have a recipe for liquid that I like.  I also found a recipe for powdered detergent that I am going to make this week to try.  It lasts longer and I really like the recipe.

It should be fine...just double check the tags.

Ahh that first load of baby laundry was so exciting.

I did. I pretty much washed everything I could take apart. Just double check the tags like Laura said.

  • Ahhh all the cleaning. My sister gave me some things and I bought a few things at a sale last weekend and I took everything apart and cleaned it all. That's when I realized just how tired I get all too fast these days.

Im the type of person that doesn't stop till I'm done with something and it was so hard to look around my house the other day and still have things i wanted to do but physically couldn't get the energy up to finish!

But I did get the covers for the bouncers washed (I have two now), the swing, a play mat, and some other random things. Then I realized I had to put it all back together. Ugh.

i haven't washed any clothes yet. I just got a whole trash bag full of clothes from a guy I used to work with and just happened to run into on Tuesday. So much to wash lol. I'll wait for Tara's recipe and then I'll tackle them :)

  • As for the cleaning, Lena, my neurotic side found it helpful to make a master list of all the things I needed/ wanted to get done before I had the baby.  I even color coded it by day of expected completion. Haha.  It helped me make things a little more manageable.  A few times I even got some "extra credit" by completing a few things ahead of schedule.  I was a little less stressed out when I at least knew there was a plan and that everything would eventually be finished.

  • That's a really good idea! That might actually stop me from feeling like I need to get everything done at one time, which is typically how I feel and what I do. Thanks for the tip!
