allergic to my wedding ring?
I started to notice that my ring finger has been really irritated lately. I thought it was just dry skin at first, but the more I look at it I'm not so sure. It looks like my skin is peeling a bit and I have a red mark with bumps. It is only on my ring finger right where my rings sit. I never had a reaction while wearing my engagement ring and even when I had my wedding band on. The only thing I can think of was that I had the bands fused. I'm not sure if I am allergic to the metal they used to fuse them. Has anyone heard or had this kind of an issue? I am definitely thinking about calling my doctor, but if it is my ring what I am going to do?
Re: allergic to my wedding ring?
This could be exactly what it is. During the winter, when your skin does get more dry, it can be more sensitive which can reveal your sensitivity to metals--perhaps from the fuse.
I had a gold allergy up until a few years ago. A quick fix would be to take a tiny amount of clear nail polish and brush it onto the fuse. This puts up a protective barrier for our skin. You'll have to do this once a month or so.
If you don't like that idea, then get tested for metal allergies. It is more common than you think and sometimes can only be on your fingers or earlobes. If you find you are allergic to the fuse, sometimes you can get them to lay a metal across the outside of the fuse to shield your finger.
Hope you figure it out!
I second everything underwne said. If it just started after you got them fused there is a good chance that its the metal they used to do it. I'd try clear nail polish. It's like the girls version of 'fix it with duct tape!' I've used it for lots! Anyway, that should create enough of a barrier to help with the allergy.
Hope you can find a more permanent solution!!!
I agree with the clear nail polish! Also, make sure you moisturize your hands with natural products, like hemp or aloe based creams. Don't use anything with perfumes because it might make it worse.
I've had several reactions like that since the wedding. I really doubt a jeweler would use a low quality enough metal to cause skin irritation since the percentage of people who have allergies to things like that is quite high.
I've realized that mine is from moisture being trapped beneath my now (bigger) ring. My ring isn't just flat metal where it touches my skin, it has negative spaces where moisture can be trapped. (or soap, etc.)
And once the irritation starts, it is harder to get rid of if you are wearing your ring. I'd not wear it for a few days, esp. at night, until it fully heals.
What type of metal is your ring? and what metal was used to fuse them, because yes allergies to metals are a lot more common then people think. Most people only have minor reactions which is why they either ignore it, think its thier skin and not a reaction ect. I forget what its called but theres a certain compound used in the process of purifying gold and silver that I am highly allergic to. I first noticed that after I got my ears pierced and spend more money to get the good gold because my mom was worried about infection, and my ears stayed infected until I finally didnt care and switched to cheap stainless steel earrings and what do you know no more infections! Then my parents gave me silver jewlerly when I graduated highschool...I cant wear it at all it leaves rashes and funny discolouration on my skin. I finally ended up talking to a jeweller about it before I got my 3rd hole in my ear and they suggested I ask my doctor, and my doctor said that it is most likely an allergy to this compound used. So I can only wear cheap jewellery or white gold (which doesnt use this stuff), no yellow gold or real silver for me.
Also a quick google search suggests that many people are also allergic to nickle (not what I am allergic too but worth looking into for you!) which is used in producing gold products as well.

OMG This exact same thing is happening to me
My rings are 19K Whit Gold and I have never had an issue...
once i got them fused I finger is so itchy, swollen and raw, that I can barley wear my ring!
I was going to call Spence Jewlers and see if there was something they could do....un fuse and fuse with something different ect.
