How long to let it sit?

So I havn't cleaned my wedding dress because supposidly all summer and then all fall we were trying to make plans with a photographer friend to do a TTD session in the woods, and I figured it wasn't worth the money to get the dress cleaned just to go out and get it dirty again and then get it cleaned again.

But she emailed us this weekend saying "sorry I am not doing any more photoshoots now until the new year, besides its cold and you don't want to freeze". I am kinda pissed off because its not like we just started looking into this, we've been on her for a while, but because she was giving us a good price because of friendship I feel like we cant say anything. Going with the photoghrapher from the wedding wasn't an option (if you remember I posted about how they filed for divorce the day after our wedding and it took quite a while for them to get us our pictures).

But now I don't want to ruin the dress either, so I don't know how long I can let it sit, can I store it for a year dirty (just from wedding day, not super dirty) or will it become discoloured? Can I wait till next spring, do a TTD  (hopefully with someone more reliable) and then clean it, or should I get on cleaning it asap?

Re: How long to let it sit?

  • I haven't had my dress cleaned yet either. After the wedding, only the bottom of my dress was dirty from dragging on the ground. We did our Rock the Dress shoot in Lake Michigan and my dress is actually cleaner now than before the shoot. I will eventually have it cleaned and preserved but I'm in no rush to do it. I think it all depends on the fabric on whether or not it will yellow but I can't imagine it'll wear that quickly especially if no one in your home smokes or if you don't burn wood for warmth. Do you still have it in the bag it came in?

  • I guess I have a hard time believing it is going to yellow THAT quickly - just think of all your other white clothes/blankets/sheets.  Like PP said I think it depends on the fabric, too.  Even if there is a spot or two, I doubt it would even be enough to notice in photos.

My dress has been hanging in the spare bedroom closet since the wedding.  I haven't even taken out my safety pin bustle...not sure what I am going to do with it.  But mine hasn't been cleaned either, yet!

  • We spot treated the mud from my dress the day of the wedding and it was almost perfect. It is still sitting in the bag (what it left of it, my kitten had a field day and shredded it but managed to NOT snag my dress) waiting to be cleaned. Sadly, I am not in a rush. I guess I will get there eventually.

  • I still haven't cleaned my dress. I don't see a huge rush to do it. I also have no idea what to do with my dress. I keep seeing on pinterest the huge shadow boxes with the dresses in there BUT where would I hang that up? So I have no idea.
  • I honest to God just want to throw mine away? Is that wrong? I have no need for it. haha. Its just hanging there being useless!

  • Thanks for the thoughts ladies, I remember the lady at the bridal place saying to try and do it in the first month, so I was worried about it, but hearing from you I think I will wait until the spring then.
  • For what it's worth, my mom was married in 1968 and just packed her dress in a box wrapped in tissue paper.  We took it out to see if it would fit me a year ago and it was just slightly yellowed- and she smokes in the house like a fiend.
