hating vacuum shopping!

Hello! I am moving and refuse to take my terrible old vacuum with us. I have a newfoundland who tracks in dust and dirt, sheds moderately and my husband refuses to take his shoes off when he enters the home. We are buying a split level, so it isn't a full flight of stairs, however I have a bad back. I'm really trying to find something with suction power, easy to navigate and not TOO heavy!

My biggest issue with the one I have right now is that I can vacuum our hardwood floors and like a crazy person shine a flashlight across the floor and I swear it looks like I didn't clean. I have a Bissel steam mop which I love, but since there is so much dirt left after vacuuming, the mop can't work up to its ability and ends up pushing the leftover dirt around.

Was going to get the dyson dc41 but it got terrible reviews. Any good experiences from all the terrible vacuums out there? Looking for the best of the worst at this point it seems...

I have been vacuum shopping too. It is tough to decide! I may go with an LG. My dad has one and says he like it better than the Dyson. He also had one from Sears that I have used at his house and I liked it because it had a little light that would signify when an area was clean. I don't remember the specific number on that vacuum though.

I'm a big fan of Bissell vacuums, they also have models that are specifically made for pet owners, which is pretty cool.

We have a purebread Collie dog, and a Persian cat. So we know a lot about dander, hair, and the big mess they involve. However, we have the Dyson DC41, and have for about a year now. We had the Bissell pet hair remover before that. So here are the pro's and con's of both

Dyson

Pro's - Amazing suction! The attatchments are wonderful, and if you have stairs then this is the vacuum for you. The attachments make it SO easy to clean the stairs. Also, you mentioned hardwood floors. We have 2 rooms with carpet, and the rest is all hardwood floors. I go over the floors with the vacuum first, then can do the floor finish or steamer right after. Have no problem at all with having any dust or dander left on the hardwood. This truly is an All-floor cleaner. Oh, and the ball technology is very easy on a bad back.

Con's - Price. Not sure how much more I can express this! It's just plain stupidly expensive. We also have owned it for a year, and have already had to use the 5 year warranty. We were told that too much of the hair got caught in the bristles, and caused the suction head to burn up and stop spinning. So it's already been repaired within the 1st year of ownership, and it's supposably the best animal vacuum ever made. HAH! This one is also a bit heavy.

Bissell

Pro's - Much better hit to the wallet when purchasing! Very lightweight. Also has great suction for carpet. This one lasted me about 4 years before needing replaced.

Con's - Not the best on hardwood. I would have to vacuum, then swiffer, then finally steam mop or floor finish my hardwood. The attachments are also "so, so." The one that is supposed to be for furniture gets clogged constantly, and if you lose the least amount of suction power then the attachment won't spin. Also not much of a warranty.

So, if I had to re-buy it all over again I probably wouldn't go with the Dyson. I've heard that "Sharp" ones are very nice, and do well with dog hair. But they are not bagless, and do not come with attachments. But I will say that I LOVE the warranty with the Dyson. If I had the same problem with my Bissell, I would've had to go buy a whole new vacuum again. At least with the Dyson I know that I'm good for 5 years.

Bissell has NO suction power and they are not reliable. I had the pet version and it worked pretty well for the first few months, then got gradually worse. About a year later it wasn't doing anything but making noise. We took it apart, cleaned it, replaced parts, and nothing. Same thing happened to my mom.

Personally, I wouldn't spend money on a Dyson either. They are extremely expensive and there are cheaper options that work just as good if not better.

I now own a Hoover and I LOVE it. It was only $100 and it gets everything off the floor. I bought it at best buy and they also have a very inexpensive warranty you can get. Here's the link:

This vacuum got really good reviews, which is why we bought it. We have three dogs who shed a lot, so we needed a reliable vacuum. I will also say that my mom owned a Hoover that she had for about ten years before it started having problems, which was another reason I chose this brand.

We bought a miele with our wedding money and the suction is amazing. Youtube miele vs dyson and you will never consider a dyson! The model we bought is a little heavy (to me) for stairs, I use an attachment and not the actual floor thing. A++ for miele!

I've heard good things about the Shark. See if you can find someone you know with one. Then test it out. That's what I did when I was between the Dyson or Kirby. HATED the Kirby!!! Or at least see what their return policy is. Then order it, and test it out on your carpet. Return it if it isn't up to par.

We have the one good for dogs, we have 6 of them and a friend of ours alergic to dogs has no worries when she stayed at our house a week when we were gone on our honeymoon last week. The dyson pet vac works awesome for all the hair.
