One night getaway

So I have been thinking I want to go away next Sunday for a night. Any suggestions? Preferably a 3 hour or less drive.

My ideas had been North Conway, Kennebunkport, Portsmouth, Foxwoods (but its 399.99 a night!!!!), etc.

I want a cute downtown with fun restaurants and some shopping... nothing that is really "dead" or more of a summer spot. Although, I am considering doing a night in Martha's Vineyard because I heard its fun this time of year.

Re: One night getaway

  • I know nothing of North Conway. I haven't been to Kennebunkport in 20 years, so no help on that one, either... and I am not into casinos and would not be happy paying $400 to stay there for a night.

Portsmouth is a great little town with cobblestone streets, brick sidewalks, cutesy shops, etc. Never grabbed more than a quick meal there so I'm not sure how many good restaurants there are, but there are plenty of them in the "downtown" area. My only concern would be if shops are open on Sunday/Monday since it's a lot of mom-and-pop type stores.

I'd consider Portland over Kennebunkport. Great downtown area with good restaurants and lots of shopping. Drive half an hour further north to shop the many outlets in Freeport. I've only ever been in the wintertime, and there was plenty going on.

I know it's not as fun to go somewhere "local," but do you spend a lot of time in Newport? I've always thought it would be fun to get a hotel in downtown Newport and go to all the restaurants and bars in downtown. And lots of shopping potential in the brick marketplace.

  • thanks for the suggestion on Portland, this is kind of what I am looking for, just some shoppign and a nice dinner out and some relaxation and nice scenery!

I can't believe its 399 a night at Foxwoods, I'm not much of a gambler and neither is DH but I know there are tons of fun/nice places to eat and thought the atmosphere might be fun (or depressing depending on how you look at it) and we could grab a drink out at night, and stop at some little local farms or antique shops on the ride down or back up... but forget that ! it's so pricey!

You are right, it is fun to get a hotel in downtown Newport. We are down there fairly frequently because DH is a reservist so he has to go to drill. Rather than go one weekend a month he tends to clump it all and go down to Newport for drill for two solid weeks, so last year we spent two weeks there- living out of a hotel room but it was a lot of fun. Now our good friends moved down there so we are down there pretty frequently to hang out with them. It is fun to stay overnight down there, so I suggest you guys do it if you have ever thought ofit! There are plenty of fun restaurants and its nice to wakeup there and be able to go for a walk on the beach in the fall or the cliffwalk without millions of people.
