That is tough. It seems like he's done what he can - go to his supervisor. I would be afraid if he just doesn't do the work, that could put his job at risk, so he probably shouldn't do that. Especially if he likes what he does.

Sorry I'm no help. I just understand that it sucks when you try and do the right thing, but it keeps falling apart.

Thanks, it is tough. He came home very unhappy again yesterday. Today was better because his work required him to go downtown to do recordings for one of his projects. He finished a project that requires Adobe before he left and got praised for completing it quickly. I think that helped his mood too.

If I was in this situation, I would put it in writing that I was uncomfortable using a product illegally. Even in a simple e-mail -- it doesn't need to be confrontational or anything, just simply state "I am uncomfortable using Adobe illegally, but the tasks you have assigned me require Adobe, so I will do what I have been instructed, i.e., download trial versions, in order to complete these tasks." Or something along those lines. I have been in this situation before, and I wanted to cover my own butt.
