Newbie here..tell me more about Cricut & Silhouette

I'm eager to learn more about these two. I  really want to start doing my own printables for parties...will these help me?  I need to learn the basics.  Do I need a special software.  Can someone help me w/this?

I think there is some information in the FAQ's up above.

  • The biggest difference between the Cricut and the Silhouette is the Cricut is a cartridge based system, so you are limited to the shapes sold by Cricut. The Silhouette is a software based system, so you need a computer, but it can cut or print with your printer any font or shape on your computer. They also have an online store where you can purchase individual shapes for anywhere from $.50 to $.99, and they also have a free shape every week.

I have the Silhouette and really love how versatile it is. It is priced higher than the Cricut, but to me, it was worth it.

  • Provocraft (owns Cricut) has a poor rating when it comes to customer service and giving its cutsomers a quality product.  Aside from that, you are limited to what PC/Cricut wants you to create by limiting you to its designs and expensive cartridges.

If price is an issue, definately go w/ the Silhouette Cameo.  It may be a bit more up front, but in the long run, you'll save tons of money because you won't be stuck with a bunch of limiting cartridges.

There are other cutters out there as well.  I have the KNK Zing that was released last year and a collaboration of KNK and the creator of Make The Cut! software.  There are many others that use the MTC! software...Klic-n-Kut has a wide variety, also check out the Black Cat machines too.  All are a bit more than the Silhouette, but have tremendous capabilities.  They also come with a big learning curve.  There is also an incredible support group for MTC! and the machines that are compatable w/ the software through the MTC! forum.

  • I love my cricut!!! But...I Have had it for years now, and have noticed that theres less and less cartridges available as many have been clearenced and they don't come out wth new ones very often....so I would't suggest getting one now (unless you can get it for a really good price or used)...I have a feeling its kinda of dying out as much as I am sad to say.
  • If you want th freedom of cutting any shape, print and cut, etc. then go with a Silhouette or one of the other machines mentioned.  I don't recommend the Cricut at all.  The other machines cut much better.
