Dropping the nap

DD is 3 1/2 and usually will read her books for about half an hour and then fall asleep but for that past couple of weeks she hasn't really been falling asleep.  Should I consider this the endof napping?  Should I still have her do a quiet time in her room?  What the heck do I do with her for 2 extra hours a day?!?!  I still need to keep the house quiet because my youngest daughter is still napping.  Not to sound selfish but that's the only time I get to watch grown up tv and get things done around the house.

Re: Dropping the nap

  • Jake went through a phase around 3.5 where I thought he was dropping his nap for good, but it turned out that it really was just a phase.  after a few weeks he went back to napping daily (I was still making him go into his room and read books in his bed quietly in the time when he was resisting the naps)

He will be 5 in January and has pretty much dropped naps, but I know he still needs that down time, because when he's awake he is go, go, go.  So I still have him go up to his room and stay there quietly for 30 minutes.  If he doesn't fall asleep in that time, then he can come out and still do something quietly that doesn't involve running around the house (like puzzles, coloring, whatever) for another 30 minutes or so.  So I figure after that, even though he didn't nap, he was getting an hour or so of some type of rest.

    RIP, nap.

  • I was going to say that I think your LO is dropping a nap, and then I read about Emmy's son's phase.

Gavin gave up napping (at home) at age 3 - basically as soon as I gave birth to Conall. *sigh* However, I did make him go to his room for quiet time and followed the same technique Emmy did.

Now, at daycare, he had no choice - every kid had to lay down on mats for nap time and, I'd say 8 out of 10 times, he fell asleep (because he wasn't allowed to look at books, etc.). Even at age 5 he would occasionally fall asleep at nap (which ended up killing us, b/c it would be at like 2p he would fall asleep, so he'd go to bed at 8pm but still be awake at 9:30 or 10p when I was going to bed!).

  • DD also went through a fighting nap stage (ours was after the binky fairy came), but she is thankfully back to napping, because when she doesn't she is a monster by 5:00.  When she wasn't napping I did make her stay in her room and read or play her v. reader.

She still naps at school for about an hour, but at home on the weekends she'll nap for atleast 2, sometimes 3 hours.  Typically we start bedtime at 8:00 (potty, brushing teeth, books, prayers, chatting about her day and the next day and snuggling) and she's asleep by 9.

  • Keep quiet time. If it is a phase, she'll go back to napping. And if it isn't, quiet time will help you both keep your sanity. Todd has refused to nap on weekends for a long while, but he definitely needs a quiet activity or quiet time in the afternoon to recharge his batteries. And he still naps at daycare every day.

  • Lanna stopped napping shortly after she turned 4. Now, I just ask her to watch TV or color or play something quiet while Wes sleeps. I need that time to get things done. Although he appears to be trying to stop napping too now. Aint happening buddy!
