Home Reno Poll (PIP encouraged)

This is a totally selfish post. H and I are about to embark on some home renovations, and I'm curious about the choices you all have made in your own homes.

We're planning to rip out carpet and either install hardwood or the wood-look tile I keep hearing about. Also re-doing all trim/baseboards and painting all the walls; painting cabinets and getting new counter tops in the kitchen; painting built-in bookshelves; etc. There's a lot of brass/wood that needs to disappear.

- - -

Tell me about your dream/favorite flooring.

What color are the walls in your house?

Any plans for reno/redecorating in the near future?

Do you have any advice on home equity loans/HELOCs?

Favorite house-related project you've tackled in the past?

Re: Home Reno Poll (PIP encouraged)

  • I think at the end of the year we are going to rip up our carpet and install the ceramic title that looks like wood floors. I think they would be more durable with a kid and dog in the house.

We haven't done any home renos. I would love to paint some of the rooms and extend our back patio, but we just keep putting it off.

I'm loving the idea of ceramic wood tile, but I haven't seen it in a house, yet. I think we're going to go shopping for some soon. We kept putting this stuff off, but visited BIL and SIL's house the other day and were floored by all the changes they've made. Definitely motivated me to get going!

  • We have the wood tile and I love it.  Unless I told you it was tile, you wouldn't know unless you touched it.  It's about the same price as some hardwood but has durability.  It does get cold on bare feet like normal tile would, so you have to get used to that I guess.  Between my dogs and kids, I am satisfied with my choice.  Plus I can rearrange furniture by just dragging it across the floor if I need to :)

Where did you get yours, if you don't mind me asking?

Not at all! I picked out all of my tile at Paschal's on Reno.  I think Interceramic down the road supplies most of the tile stores on Reno, if I remember correctly.  I also found some I liked at Metro Tile as well, but it didn't look good with the regular tile I was putting in the kitchen/entry.  I think my tile is called suede something or other.  It looks like barn wood.  Very distressed, not all one color.  Overall it's medium to dark in color.

  • We've (well, I have) painted the living room, entry way, dining room, hallway, and guest bathroom, and all of them are painted a neutral sandpaper/tan color (I can't recall the real name right now), but the bathroom is a seafoam green color.  G's room is a neutral tan color with 1 red accent wall.  We've also done small things like replacing outlet covers (we now have oil-rubbed bronze covers.  The old ones were gold--enough said) and we've replaced some light fixtures.

Our big project is pulling up the carpet and putting laminate flooring in...we bought the flooring and have had it ready and waiting for longer than I care to admit, we just need to find the time to tackle that project.  I loathe our carpet and will shed tears of joy when our new flooring is in.

After the floors, we'll probably go to the guest bathroom, then the kitchen or master bathroom. I want to paint our bedroom, too.  Eventually, our house will be awesome Wink

  • Our rent house is all laminate and while I'm not in love with the laminate, I love not having carpet.  My old house only had carpet in the bedrooms and I liked that too.

The walls here are boring white, but I like bright colors.

In our old house, s redid our master bath and it was amazing once it was done.  It took him far too long, but the shower was fabulous!  We remodeled that whole house and the one before it and the bathroom was by far my favorite

I PPH that bathroom. It has inspired some ideas we have for what we eventually want our master bathroom to be like :)

Boymom's floors are absolutely gorgeous.  I had no idea the first time I saw them they were tile until she said something.

That bathroom was awesome! I wish we had more room to add a bigger shower!

  • We recently installed ceramic "wood" tile and are very pleased with them so far.  I'd PIP but I have no idea how to from my phone.

We painted the walls gray. They were originally a couple different shades of brown. Now they have a bluish undertone. We have white trim and plan to add crown molding in the future. DH also installed casing around the windows. We still have a few odds and ends to finish and need to paint the guest bedroom as soon as BIL moves out. Eventually we would like to upgrade our bathroom adding tile in the shower instead of the inserts.

Not much help in the way of home equity loans. We are just trying to do a little bit at a time.

  • BoyMom - Thanks! I will check those out. I think we will do some window shopping this weekend.

buttercup - Your house sounds similar to how I'd like ours to look. We've already painted some gray, and I think I'm going to continue that theme on the walls. Considering mixing in some gray/purple or gray/blue here and there, but I'm not sure.

  • We just bought our house this summer. It was built in 1974, but has been updated since: once in the 90's, and then a partial update around 2009. The kitchen remains solidly 1995, as do the brass doorknobs, but the wing of the house with the bedrooms and 2 bathrooms is mostly current.

Tell me about your dream/favorite flooring. I love the look of the deep espresso engineered hardwood we have on the bedroom wing of the house, but it's not really that practical for us. It's not distressed, so it shows every scratch, and because it's so dark it shows lint/dust/furballs. I swiffer all the freaking time. I much prefer the original solid oak hardwoods we have in the hallway, entry, and playroom.

What color are the walls in your house? The previous owners painted mostly everything cream before they listed it. Our bedroom is a warm light blue, and we've painted a hallway and the wall behind the bar in shades of brown. You all have seen my PIPed kitchen with it's 1995 country plaid wallpaper :/ When we strip it and texture I will paint it a neutral tone of light blue. I know it's cliche, but I love neutrals. Our house will end up in tones of cream and brown and gray, with "neutral" shades of blue and green. H loves red and I'm in a slow process of getting rid of anything red he brought to the marriage.

Any plans for reno/redecorating in the near future? Yes; hopefully we'll be updating the kitchen by stripping wallpaper/texturing/painting walls, new countertops, and painting the cabinets and trim white. We're wrapping up our living room floor project right now: we restained a portion of the concrete and are laying carpet on the other part. Hard to explain.

Do you have any advice on home equity loans/HELOCs?

Favorite house-related project you've tackled in the past?We just did an inexpensive update to the guest bath: took down the sliding glass bath doors, framed the mirror, painted the cabinets and trim white to match the rest of that wing, painted the walls a beautiful gray. It's amazing what those changes did to that bathroom.
