St. Clair hospital vs. West penn. WWYD?

I'm 24 weeks pregnant and I live in USC. I've been seeing west penn ob/gyn for this entire pregnancy and I'm really happy with the practice. The doctors I've met are really friendly, the staff it's extremely nice and helpful so overall I'm content. The original reason I chose the practice was because I wanted to VBAC and they were on board with it, but after considering my options, I decided to just have a repeat C-section so my mom can come down and help with our toddler (we have no family here).

I seriously live 10 mins from St. Clair as opposed to like at least 30 mins from West penn. My husband thinks it'll be easier if we're close to the house because he and my mom can swap duties and it's easier to get to St. Clair than it is to get to West Penn. I completely agree with him on that but gosh I REALLY love my practice.

I would have to find a new doctor that deliver in St. Clair and I've read horrible things about Dr. Bulseco's practice. I've had a couple of complications with this pregnancy and my current practice already has the the entire history. I'm just torn. I want to be closer to the house because DH can go back and forth and check on our son, etc but at the same time.. I think I'm only going to be in West penn for 3 days so we can suck it up right? Sorry this is too long but WWYD?

Re: St. Clair hospital vs. West penn. WWYD?

  • I delivered both of my girls at St Clair (3 years and 4 months). I had wonderful deliveries and would highly recommend St Clair Hospital. I have been with Dr. Bulseco's practice for 4 years and would be happy to give my opinion if you would like it. Feel free to email me at saintaliaknife at gmail dot com

I made the same choice when I was 28 weeks pregnant with my first. I has seeing doctors at Maggee but I quit my job and then it became a trek to get to oakland. We live just a few streets up from St Clair . I believe it was the best decision i ever made. I was able to stay in the labor room for my entire stay, everyone I came in contact with was incredibly sweet and being so close to my house was wonderful.

  • I would suck it up and deliver with the doctors and practice you are comfortable with.
  • I would also stick with your current practice.

  • Stick with your current practice and deliver at West Penn....especially because you have had issues with your current pregnancy.

  • I would also stick with my current practice. You're talking about making a pretty big decision over a minor convenience for a 3 day period.  I would personally not even consider switching.
  • I think you should stick it our with your curent practice. You seem very comfortable with them and confident that they know your delivery plan and past history. If you do end up switching. I am a Bulceso practice patient and I do not have anything negative to say about the doctors (and this is through 2 m/c, 1 d/c, and 2 babies) and I was extremely pleased with the level of care I experienced at SCMH. I especially love Dr. Griffin, the house peditrician there.

  • Thank you all for the replies! I have a strong feeling of sticking with my current practice, so I think that's what I'm going to do. I appreciate the responses :)
  • FWIW a little late... I see the Bulseco group- specifically Dr. Brown for like 9 yrs. I I had to see all of them during my pregnancy and some I like better than others but didnt have a real problem with any of them.

I had a GREAT delivery at St. Clair. they rooms are great. I did have to leave because I ended up in a c-section but everything was in one room. Even when Adam was jaundice and had to spend extra time there they check me out and him in and we never had to leave the same room.

ditto. We live 4.5 miles from a big/good hospital that I work right at. But my practice delivers at a different one about 25 mins away. Would have been convenient at the close place but I would never switch my drs because I adore my dr!

although fwiw I went to Bulseco practice when I first started seeing gyn. My mom is a nurse and asked around for recommendations (she goes to a guy elsewhere and I didn't want a guy so she looked around for others options) and a few people recommended them. Although this was years ago and nothing to do with pregnancy.

  • I delivered both of my girls c-sections at St. Clair with Bulseco's group (specifically, Drs. Bulseco and Brown).  Dr. Bulseco is very straight forward and sort of curt at times but I have trusted her opinion.  The Family Birth Center at St. Clair is wonderful.

With that being said, I would stick with your current OBGYN.  Being so far along and being able to plan a repeat c-section I don't see much of an advantage to switch.
