Oct 22nd Weekly Randoms

Here's to yet another week.

Warning the following is a complete vent.

We've been at my parents for 6 weeks now and I don't think this is going to work. We have completely different schedules. The house is a ranch and we sleep in the finished part of the basement. Since we've been there DH hasn't been able to get a goods night sleep at all. He general stays up a bit later after SS and I go to bed to get some more work done. Which means he needs to sleep later in the morning. My Dad works schedule starts at 3AM and he is usually home by 10-10:30AM. My Mom who doesn't work and doesn't sleep that well is usually up around 6-7am but sometimes at 5AM and other times she sleeps in as late as 8AM. The problem with all this is we can here someone walking around above us.

Yesterday my Dad helped me rearrange the basement so our bed is now further down the house. Hoping that would help with the foot traffic. Well this AM about 6:30AM we were awaken by thumping noise. It was fairly consistent to the point that we started to wonder is my Mom had fallen or something. I went upstairs and found her in the computer room at the computer. I asked what the noises were and she didn't know. Asked if she was doing anything that would make a noise and she thought that maybe it was from her making the bed. I went back to bed and the noise happen a few more times. DH finally gave up on getting sleep and got up and went to the Gym.

DH knows is body very well. He is already telling he is having problems concentrating and remembering things. We both know it is from lack of sleep. It isn't like my parents are not trying to help and try and be quiet but I don't think they can be quiet enough with us trying to sleep in the basement. I am really at a lost on what to do. I've looked for places but what we could afford and what we need doesn't aline with a place to live. We could afford a small 1bd in a not so great area but need a 2 bedroom in Coopersville school district.

Re: Oct 22nd Weekly Randoms

  • Has he tried sleeping with a fan on or sleeping with music?  I had the basement room in my teens, and a box fan to drown out the upstairs noise was a must for me.  Sometimes I slept with the tv on too.  What about ear plugs?

  • We sleep with a box fan on High, a heater and an air purifier all going at night. He did try ear plugs before and they didn't help either. DH's ear are hyper sensitive for lack of a better word. Great for some of the work he does but not so great for sleeping in a basement.
  • Sad That's crappy.  I hope he finds a way to get some sleep.

  • I'm sorry, no advice here other than maybe sleeping pills until he gets used to the new environment?
  • Sorry that the transistion to living w/ your parents isn't going great. I'd agree with Wendy - maybe see about getting some sleeping pills for him, even over the counter meds might help like Tylenol PM or Unisom.
What about maybe looking for a mobile home to rent or purchase - if your parents are able to help you out at all. I saw a few on craigslist in Coopersville and Allendale. Then all you would pay would be a lot rent and utilities - less than an apartment.
Apartment living won't guarentee quiet sleeping time. We were in an apartment when we moved here and I swear the guy that lived above us was an elephant because he was so loud at all hours of the day and we could hear the family below us yelling at each other. Also, don't forget that there is school of choice so SS can still go to Coopersville no matter where you live.
Hope you guys are able to figure something out that will work. I'm sure it is stressful.

  • We use melatonin here rather than sleeping pills & it seems to help.

I am a really light & oversensitive sleeper.  The only earplugs that have worked for me are the purple ones at Meijer Pharmacy.  They are the 33 rated ones, and they seem to block out almost anything I've ever needed it to.

I hope you're able to figure something out.  Would buying everyone a nice pair of soft squishy slippers to wear upstairs be an option?

  • Man that stinks.

Like a PP, I'm also a very light sleeper and never seem to get a good nights sleep. To ATTEMPT a better nights sleep, I use over the counter sleep aids, sometimes melatonin, but every single night I HAVE to sleep with ear plugs in (my husband snores).

How long have you been at your parents house? There's always an adjustment period, maybe it will get better as you adjust? Otherwise, look into all the suggestions that have been given here.

  • Thanks Girls!

I'm not sure last night was better or not. I woke up to noise about 7AM and couldn't get back to sleep. Mom was up at 4AM with a headache which is most likely what I/we heard. DH is still in bed trying to get sleep. Yesterday and today I've had to move clients appointments to later in the day or a different day entirely.

I've spent some time looking for places for us to move to. The mobile home park closet to us doesn't have anything available but said to call back in a few weeks to check again.

  • Deeder - I hear ya there. I am sorry for things for you :(  I got my discharge paperwork in the mail last week. So I am thankful for that. BUT I am finding out life on the other side of that sucks now. I want to pull my hair out!!!! Hang in there - I know you can do it!

  • Charity: Congrats on the discharge. It's a huge hurdle to get over that part. Yep, it is hard I agree with you on that. Just take it one day at a time.
  • Hi Strangers!

I'm here. Doing the same old thing. I'm not sure what I should change, but something has got to give! I guess I'll wait for my Bar results though. I'm trying to decide whether or not I will retake it if it's not good news. Although that is money we don't have.

The doggy is doing fine. She's still a barker (even if the doorbell rings on TV- we don't have a bell), but she's a sweetie.

B is still loving his job and I'm happy for him. We are open to moving back home if I get a job there though. Time will tell.

Deeder- sorry things aren't ideal at your parents.

  • So glad to "see" you again.

I rearranged the bedroom again to where we had it before as it was somewhat less noisy on that sound. It doesn't mean we sleep straight through the night but hopefully we can figure things out.

  • I have been happy all this week, am smiling a lot, and doing well.

  • So my Mom is looking at weight loss surgery. She has a consult next month so they can figure out which type to do. I think its been narrowed down to between lap-band or Gastric sleeve. The Dr's want to do this before they go forward with another knee surgery. The only concern that my Dad, DH and myself have is if she does this surgery will she be able to keep to the diet plan for the rest of her life. Right now her diet is not good.

Does anyone know someone that has had either of these surgeries?

  • My brother in law had it done, but also his gallbladder removed.  He started working out a LOT afterwards too, and now looks creapy skinny rather than really big like he used to.  But, he's stuck with a really limited diet, because that's the only way he can keep from making himself really ill.

I've contemplated it myself. One of the ladies who works in my building had it done and had some complications and looks creepy skinny now. My SIL has 3-4 friends who've had it done and they gained all the weight back and then some. Don't ask me how. I've decided since I really don't have any health issues that I'm going to keep plugging away at it. I did gain it overnight (depo provera, never take that!) but as long as the scale keeps going down instead of up, however slowly, I'm going to try to be happy.

I have actually lost a bit of weight recently. I think it's because of the stress and that I am no longer really that hungry at times so I don't eat. If that makes sense. I need to weigh myself on the scale because I have no idea how much I have lost. All my jeans are falling off my butt.

See that's what I'm worried about. She isn't the healthiest eater to start with. So I'm worried that she would lose a bunch of weight and then it would start to come back on.

Also, regarding depro, I'm scared to go that route. Not just for the weight gain but I know 2 people that got pregnant 3x on it.

I recently had a chance to visit the Grandville YMCA. Nice place.

  • I was on depo a long time & didn't have consequences at all.  However, the more I know now I will never ever take it (or any BC for that matter) again.  It isn't worth the risks to me, especially as a not very active married lady.

More often than not, it seems people gain the weight back after those surgeries because they just aren't prepared for the lifestyle changes.  I think that portion of it, and the counseling, need to be much more significant and solidly in place BEFORE the surgery to make it work.

I think the reason my BILs has worked long term is because he was told he'd die if he didn't thin down, plus the altered diet he needed anyway, and then he felt like a totally different person being thin & now is really dedicated to keeping it that way.
