Early Voting

Most states allow early voting starting this week and next. If you haven't voted absentee, will you get out early and vote next week? Check your state board of elections website to see where to go. I found this list, too. http://lulac.org/programs/civic/Early_Voting_Calendar/

Re: Early Voting

  • Our state requires that you check a box asserting that you'll be out of the area on election day if you want to vote early.  Since I won't in fact be out of the area on election day, I'm not going to early vote.

The lines will be long, but I kind of like the excitement.  So, double-edged sword.

  • Virginia has absentee voting and not early voting.  There are various reasons to justify absentee voting though.

I have voted absentee in the past couple of elections (VA's gov race is an off year election) but I will be going in person this year.  My debate is whether to take DS or not.  I want him to see us participating but that might be too much to ask of a toddler.

Unless he's a very still child, I don't recommend it.  We've taken DS for the same reason and he always tries to wander off.  I had to chase him down but I was afraid of how far I could go with my ballot, stepping out of line, etc.

The last time was our state's primary so no one was there and it was still a PITA, I can't even imagine how terrible it would be with a massive presidential election day line.  Until he's a bit older I'll only take him to the more low-key polls.

  • If by still, you mean rambunctious and possibly hanging from the polling booths, than yes.  I may need the UN monitoring my polling place just because of my kiddo.
  • I like voting the day of.  The church I vote at never has long lines and they have home-made cookies and coffee that I always look forward to.

  • I vote day of now, but all through college I voted absentee. I would get my ballot from my hometown because the permanent address on my driver's license was my parent's house.

Since both candidates are encouraging people to vote early, I hope it becomes a more common occurrence.  I think the entire country should have early voting.  There will always be a "day after" the election, so why are people opposed to it?

  • Washington recently changed to all vote-by-mail. Kind of bums me out because I liked going to the voting booth!
  • Just voted early at lunch today.  I work at the polls on Election Day. I work at my polling place but for the sake of those working, vote early if you can. There really is no need to show up at the polls.

Maybe just additional resources? Especially for places where early voting hours extend to some nights and weekends when offices are usually closed.

Or, you know, the conspiracy theories: either a) that it facilitates voter fraud and people will vote early AND day-of (dun dun dun!) or b) that only having day-of voting will keep the turnout lower in more populated areas that tend towards blue (dun dun dun!).

  • I am going to vote on Election Day.  I'm really excited to vote, but I like going on Election Day.  I don't have the desire to vote early.

I think it's problematic when polls try to judge enthusiasm for a certain candidate by early voting because Republicans are very passionate and excited but generally prefer to go on Election Day.  For example, McCain had more votes than Obama on Election Day 4 years ago.
