Flying to Edinburgh or London?

Hi everyone,

Looking to visit my best friend who's currently living in Edinburgh. I live in DE so I usually fly out of Philly or Baltimore. Last time I went to Europe, I flew out of JFK in NY to Dublin through Aer Lingus. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions of airlines to look at and/or places to fly into/out of. I was thinking it could be cheaper to fly into London & take a train to Edinburgh (& also get some London sightseeing in). Any help is appreciated!

Re: Flying to Edinburgh or London?

  • I would first price out the flights to know for sure  Second the train to edinburgh is a long one if I remember correctly. When I flew to Birmingham I found going through Amsterdam was less expensive than London by a lot. I flew Klm JFK to Amsterdam and then to Birmingham as well. You can also check Newark

  • I would just do a series of searches on Kayak varying the departure/arrival cities.  That way you can compare all the airlines at once and get an idea what's cheaper.

  • Delta is having a big fall sale on flying to Europe.  I believe from NYC to Dublin, round trip, was only $570.  There are usually sales to London, but you will still pay around $800 (plus the price of the train ticket to Edinburgh).  Check the website, I seriously considered flying to Dublin just because the deal is so good, but I'm having a baby in the next few weeks and decided it just wasn't the right time to be flying out of the country  Stick out tongue

  • The train from London to Edinburgh is quite a long trip, just an FYI. Unless you plan to stay in London for at least 1 night, I would fly directly into Edinburgh.  Most of your layovers will be in Dublin or London, since Edinburgh is usually a smaller plane.

As far as airlines, I've always had luck with Aer Lingus or Royal Dutch Airlines.

But another way you could look is to fly into London, then get a flight from London to Edinburgh through RyanAir. It's a cheap European airline that you can sometimes grab roundtrip flights for around $50.

Enjoy Edinburgh while you are there. That is one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited.
