Sandy

So, are we believing the hype or is it going to be a bust?

Just curious on everyone's thoughts.

I think DH is going to be cutting down a few limbs and dead trees before Sunday and I've already heard grocery stores are getting mobbed this morning.  Living less than a mile from the bay, I'm starting to worry.

Re: Sandy

  • We're going to stock up on a few things - soup, non-refrigerated staples. We're filling up a few water jugs and making sure we have enough clean diapers and batteries. I also plan to trim some trees and clean up the leaves around the drains in our house.

We figure if we do a little bit of prep nothing will happen.

ETA: We aren't going to go all-out crazy with prepping or anything, though.

  • I need to pay more attention. I keep seeing people freaking out on FB but people like to freak out so I have brushed it off. I guess we will do as we always do (similar to what Madlady said) and hope for the best.

  • I usually don't really worry to much about these things, but for some reason this one has my attention. I never worry about heading to the store before a major storm is predicted but I do intend to go this time, just for the things that we are about to run out of.

  • We are going to the store tomorrow because we need to go to the store, not so much because of the storm. We are farther west so I'm guessing it'll be fine, but we'll have to see. If it does cut inland near us, who knows. I still have a gallon of water left over from...Irene?

  • B has been talking about it all week. Remember he mentioned it on Sun when you guys were here.  I was planning to hit the grocery store tonight anyway, but now I'm gonna make sure we have stuff.

I wasn't too worried, but now it seems with both storms hitting here, it might not be nice. People in my office have already talked about if MD will close on Monday.

  • I don't really tend to buy in to the hype and I personally don't think any of them know what they're talking about.  I will say that I'll be pissed if we lose power and it causes me to lose all the food we just got at the grocery store Tuesday night.  The freezer is stocked right now!

My inlaws want to come stay with us because they live in a mobile home but they have a dog and our lease strictly says we can't have dogs.  ;)

  • Everytime the weathermen hype up a storm it never happens especially when we're talking about snow storms.  It always "takes a turn."  That being said, I will stop at the grocery store for a few items.  I feel like I have to at least get stuff for DS even though I'm a little doubtful of how big this storm is going to be.

  • The wind threat really worries me because our house is surrounded by gigantic trees. We're also not far from the water so I guess it is possible the water could creep up. We lost power for like 4 days during the derecho so I'm sure ours will go out again. We have several jugs of water for the water cooler plus I filled up 3 water cooler jugs with tap water. We already have a bunch of flashlights and I made sure I have batteries for my reading light so I can at least read for entertainment. I've been trying to use up the perishable foods and drinks as well.
  • my coworker went to the store last night; she said it was nuts then.

We have a little stockpile and we're less than a mile from the store, if we really need anything.

DH is going to help his Dad install a back up generator tomorrow morning, so I may go to the store and get some non perishables.

  • I do think it's going to be pretty bad for Maryland in general based on the forecasts I saw this morning- I hadn't paid much attention either until today.  I'm sure that we will lose power, I just hope that none of the trees come down on the house.  I'm really worried about that because we had so many trees down in our area during Irene and that bad storm this summer, somehow we managed to escape damage then but I don't know if we'll be so lucky a third time.

I'm sort of planning the opposite re- food, I'm going to eat everything that we can in the fridge over the next 2 days!  I don't want to lose a refrigerator full of food.  I've also started filling freezer bags and tupperware with ice to stock the freezer and will turn the temp way down so that hopefully at least our frozen food will keep for a couple of days.  And I'll put away patio furniture and planters outside just in case, and make sure that we have batteries.  Fingers crossed that it takes a different turn!

  • If I were near the water or on the Shore, I might worry. But being in Crofton, we're far enough inland and our power lines are underground, so I'm not very concerned. In the past year and a half (with Irene, the derecho, etc.), the most we've lost power is 30 minutes during the derecho this summer.

However, I'll probably park my car away from any trees beginning on Sunday night, and I might grab some nonperishable snacks, just in case. And wine. I'm definitely going to buy wine.
  • I don't know what to think. I'm sure we're going to see some effects of the storm, but how much? I think it's too early for anyone to say for certain. I'm pissedoff because we're due to leave for Florida on Tuesday and it looks like the storm may impact that. Livid.

I would be soooo mad. Is there any way you can get out of here this weekend??

  • I just did a TJ's run, so we have lots of snacks and some canned food/pre-cooked rice, etc.

Our big freezer has room in it, so I should freeze more water. We have a stash of non-drinkable water in detergent/vinegar jugs for hand-washing and toilet flushing should we lose power, since we are on a well. We will fill bath tubs on Sunday night I guess?

I need to buy more disposable diapers and I guess get a ton of laundry done this weekend, so we don't have piles of dirty diapers/clothes if we get hit and lose power/water.

I think that if we lose power for more than 24 hrs we would probably seek refuge w/ my parents or a hotel.

  • I think we are going to get something.  They are getting crazy prepped here at work.
  • I have to work Sunday and Monday, and I've already been getting calls and emails reminding me to pack extra clothes/toiletries/meds/etc in case I have to stay at the hospital. Ugh, kill me now. But I'd rather be stuck there and safe instead of trying to get home in crazy winds and rain! Fingers crossed it's not as bad as they're making it seem...

  • DH has been following this all week.  I think we're going to get a storm, but who knows about the timing or the amount.  I would rather have snow than rain if we're going to get hit, but of course I could do without the wind and damage.

  • It looks like we're going to get something; but who knows how bad it will be.  DH loves to stockpile "provisions" for these sorts of things, so I think we should be good. ;)  I've got my fingers crossed that we continue to be lucky in the tree department since we're surrounded by big poplars and pine trees.  I'm also praying that if we lose power it isn't for long since the pool is closed and that means my backup source for toilet flushing water is gone. Sad

  • We live in a water community and our house is one block from the water.  You can see the community boat ramp from our driveway.  It floods in this area during normal rain - so we are obviously at extreme risk.  We got the call from the county on Friday warning of a potential evacuation and our Saturday another call from the Emergency Alert system suggesting a volunatry evacuation since we live in a low lying area.

Hubby & I spent all day Saturday/Sunday preparing our home the best we could.  We placed sandbags along the back of the house to prevent flooding through the back door of our garage (happened previously) and removed all front porch/back patio furniture.

As of now we still have power but the flooding as begun in our area.  The water levels were already high at about 2 p.m. yesterday.

Businesses are boarded up down here!  Very erie.  Stay safe everyone.
