XP from GBCN: IMHA experience??

I posted over on GBCN but I didn't know if anyone over here isn't part of that site.

My pup was just diagnosed with IMHA. Wondering if anyone has experience with this and can offer advice.

  • oh dear I am sorry! That is a scary disease and can be touch and go for a while. How is your pup doing?

  • She is doing better. We went for repeat bloodwork and her RBC was up to 28. The only slightly scary thing is that I saw a different vet at the practice (her usual one was OOT) and he didn't seem 100% convinced of the IMHA diagnosis. He said her presentation was not "textbook". This makes me nervous that she may be misdiagnosed or that they are missing something.

  • My dog was just diagnosed with this or AIHA, I think they are essentially the same things (an auto-immune hemolytic anemia).  She was at 17% PCV two weeks ago, Tuesday she was at 37%, which is normal.  She is on 4 different meds right now.  She might have had a stroke or blood clot too as she has lost sensation in her right paws.  It has been a tough couple of weeks for me, especially being reminded that she is getting older (9), and isn't going to be around many more years.  My dogs energy level is good now, but we are going to start decreasing her steroids next week, which has me nervous.  I hope her PCV continues to stay high as the steroids are decreased.  I found a really good support group board online the other day if you are interested in it the link to it is http://www.vetnet.co.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=vetnetbbs&access=00000000000000&mode=tlist&subject=7

  • Hi there...

Sorry to hear about your pup!  While I cannot comment on your specific pup, my best advice is to literally question everything the doctor says until you understand what is going on.  There can be many different things to consider when any disease process occurs, so please just ask!! As a veterinarian, I LOVE it when I have clients ask questions and really want to understand the disease their pet has, why we do the tests and why the treatment is what it is.

A great website on many different diseases is  www.veterinarypartner.com    You can go there and search for IMHA.  There is a really helpful handout with pictures that explains what it is, what tests are done, etc.

I hope this helps and that your dog feels better soon!
