I'm scared! My work already closed for two days!!! Who else lives somewhere affected?

Re: Hurricane sandy!!!!

  • I'm not too nervous about it. Whatever happens will happen. If we lose power we have our grill to cook on and it's not that cold out where heat will be an issue. I'll probably fill our bathtub with water just in case and call it a day.

I did think it was funny that I got a call from National Grid telling me to report power outages by calling from my home phone or going online.

  • Not so much about the hurricane, but we (well I didn't feel it) just had a 7.5 shallow earthquake last night, and the center is 20km from where my uncle is doing a presentation and is there for the weekend and havn't heard from him.

Last I heard there were no confirmed injuries, so hoping it stays that way until he contacts someone. He may have been evacuated which might explain the no cell service.

  • People here are busy prepping for the storm, also.  Schools are being closed, and the gov apparently declared it a state of emergency.  But, I will most likely have to work.. because, you know, payroll?  Totally just as important as hospitals.

Even though we have the ability to have other offices in other states handle our clients.  But you know..  why bother?

I really hope this turns out to be a false alarm.

  • Go to your local Emergency Management (City/County/State) website for evacuation information...

Sign up for text alerts (data goes through even when voice doesn't)

Look at www.ready.gov if you need readiness tips... or simply ask :-)

I'm just a nerd like that...

  • I'm thinkin about all of you! I live pretty muh smack in the middle of Canada so only have to worry about the occasional tornado ( which suits me just fine, extreme weather terrifies me) I hope you and all your families stay safe! Keep us updated as much as you all can!!!

  • I am on Martha's Vineyard and we are expected to get hit pretty big, but this always happens and then the storm is barely anything, but we shall see what happens... so far nothing has been cancelled as far schools or my work.

  • I'm not too concerned. We are halfway between Cape Cod and Boston, so we will get wind and rain for sure. There will be local flooding. The governor has already declared a state of emergency and I guess alot of schools have already cancelled classes for tomorrow. We have a generator if we lose power, plus we have a camper with gas, so we can always go in there if need be. It's not too cold yet, but we do have a fireplace for heat. I guess as New Englander I don't panic too much because, well, you can't control the weather. You just prepare for it.
  • Stay safe everyone!

  • Lyss,

I'm right with you being just up the line, but we're prepared, cars are gassed, emergency kits out and the generator fired up and test this morning.  Being as we are already so prepared, it will probably blow out to sea and fizzle.

  • Just got the call...  we are expected to be at work, business as usual, tomorrow.  double ugh.

All the weather reports say it might be okay in the morning, but pretty much don't expect to drive anywhere after noon.  Awesome.

  • I just got notice that I don't have to go in to work tomorrow. I was freaking out a bit about having to drive in the bad weather since my job never shuts down. Thankfully though, I'm not  'essential' staff.

The news is making it sound scary. I'm hoping it won't be as bad as they're saying.

H still has to go in to work though, so I'll probably spend tomorrow worrying about him.

  • We live in Delaware near Newark. We're hunkered down and both of us are at home. We have a no drive ban on our state. It is really scary, but nice to be home with H! We both have tomorrow off too...
  • We're all here at work, awaiting word on when we can leave.  Highways are being shut down, and yet we're still here.

Hopefully they let us go soon!

  • H got the call this morning to not go into work today- yay!

Our state issued a no drive ban for highways starting at 1p.m.  It's still pretty calm here for now- a little windy but nothing too bad. They're saying it's going to get much worse in the next few hours and overnight. Some towns have already started flooding.

I think it's inevitable that we'll lose power, but I'm hoping it's not for too long :(

  • So far lots of wind and lots and lots of flooding and a lot of roads are closed due to down trees and flooding. Still have power though :)

I am hoping the agency H and I work for will be closed again tomorrow :)
