Post Sandy Check - in

how did everyone fare? We're in Phoenixville and didn't lose power, I know people here did. John's school is without power, but they requested people evacuate that could and only had 100 students left. We have some limbs down in our backyard, but nothing huge, we were really spared and I'm abundantly grateful.

Re: Post Sandy Check - in

  • I'm in Drexel Hill, and we lost power for about an hour yesterday around 4:30pm.  Aside from that and a few small branches in our yard, we made out fine.

  • We don't have power in Malvern.  The yard just has some branches down, and a tree is laying across one of our local streets in the development.  Overall, I feel really lucky!  Hoping the shore place made it out ok, that may be another story!

My work is open today, and the roads really aren't too bad.  Lots of places are closed and the streets were empty!

    Hope everyone else is ok!

  • Haven't been out and about in South Philly yet, but our street seems to be okay. We have a couple of large trees on the block that i was worried about, but they are still standing. Our lights flickered a couple of times yesterday, but the power stayed on. We get a little bit of water in our basement when it rains, and it was no worse than usual. A basement flood was my biggest fear.
  • Safe and Sound in SP too and kept power. I am absolutely shocked we have a dry basement, we get water for every little storm. Our shore house was holding up pretty good too, my dad has surveillance cameras but we lost the connection by the morning, heading down there this weekend to check on it. So grateful it wasn't as bad as expected in our area. I am in work now for a half day and it is dead

  • We never lost power in East Falls and have no damage to the house so I'm happy. I went into work this AM. Surprisingly the Schuylkill River is high but didn't flood in East Falls down on Kelly Drive. I noticed a couple of down trees and a few road closures but nothing too bad. I even got to work early because no one was on the road. I'm back home now. My office has power but no heat and our phone service, Internet and email all cut out a little past 9:00.

  • We completely lucked out.  A few flickers of the lights, but it stayed on the whole time. We went to sleep in our bedroom last night, but I couldn't sleep with all of the wind and was feeling anxious. So, at 1am, went to the living room to camp out on the floor. Slept like a rock until 7 am.

Work has been closed for two days and the mister was off, too.  We drove around town today and there's minimal damage. Mostly small branches and a handful of larger branches.

I'm concerned for friends that are in NYC/Hoboken. It looks terrible and I know one whose car was "gone" as of 11pm last night and the lobby of her bldg was flooded.

  • We're doing well in Glenside. Power never went out (other than a few flickers) but cable and internet was out all day until about 10 minutes ago. No damage to our house but a lot of trees down in our neighborhood. One neighbor had the corner of his house clipped pretty good.

We just drove around and passed a house that had a tree in its attic. So crazy and scary. We were super fortunate with all the 100 yr old trees that are twice the sizes of the houses around here.

Now that we have the TV on, I just can't believe the damage in NY and NJ. So horrible.

  • Safe and sound here too in SP. No water in the basement and none of the trees on our street came crashing down surprisingly. Other than a few flickers of the lights our power stayed on. My parents lost power for a bit yesterday and I thought they would be crashing in our living room with the beagle.  The wind was insane last night. We slept through it surprisingly. I will probably be back to work tomorrow just as DH is coming up on his days off for the week. I guess no Septa is no longer an excuse.

  • Safe and sound in Buxmont except...

We are officially over 24 hours without power. We lost it at 8 last night and as of this post, still have none.

  • We're ok. None of the (many) huge trees around our house fell although they were whipping back and forth terrifyingly during the storm.

We lost a few shutters off the house and our mail box pole snapped in two.

Our neighborhood still has no power so we came back to the city and are staying in the Philly house. We're so lucky we still have it for another couple of weeks  and that we went to the effort of staging it so we have furniture.

I am very grateful for heat and electricity right now. We still have many friends in Hoboken and it's an absolute mess up there - the national guard has been called in.

I'd say we got off easily, but hope power comes back soon for everyone still living without it!

  • We were pretty lucky in Ardmore...lost power on Monday afternoon but it was back on by the time we went to bed. Our yard is a mess, lots branches and leaves (but nothing we can't chop up on our own).

Our poor Hoboken friends have been stuck in their little condo with a 2-year old and relatives visiting from England for a few days w/out power, and as of last night they still had 3ft of water in their lobby (so they're completely stuck). Their car is also under water! I guess a lot of the condo buildings there have basement parking, so that's probably the case for a lot of people.

  • Safe and sound here.

My family in north jersey are all running off generators but okay. I have a bunch of friends in Hoboken and NYC that are fairing okay-ish at the moment.  but yeah lots of flooding etc.

  • We're okay in South Jersey.  I haven't had power since 4:30 on Monday, and assume I'm not getting it anytime soon.  PSE&G isn't even giving out estimates...if you call and ask they say 8pm on Monday 11/5, which is when they expect everyone to be up.  So I assume we won't have power until then, which means lots of uncomfortable nights at the in laws and long commutes to work.  It's super cold in the house and there are live wires dangling precariously close to our house...so we are not hanging there.  Am very happy we are all safe though.  Halloween has been postponed in our town until Saturday.  Which means I'm over halloween and happy to just eat the candy we bought ourselves.
  • We made it unscathed in Glenside.  Had power the whole time though the wind made the lights flicker a few times.

  • We're still without power. PECO is estimating 11pm tonight, but I'll believe it when I see it.

We stayed at my ILs last night, and it took 1.5 hrs to get from KoP to Ardmore for work today.

So sad about all of the pictures coming out of the shore, and particularly my beloved Ocean City.

  • We have implemented Camp G- South for the week.  We have evacuated family from the Jersey Shore at my house and my cousin's house in DC.  We were fine with absolutely nothing happening.  It was a bit difficult to be trapped with family and an 18 month old for the past few days in a tiny condo.  I was so excited to leave that I made it to work 30 mins early today.

I am hoping that the beach houses are okay.  We know there is water but we are hoping that it hit the lower level (split level in Brig) and just filled the ground level garage (OCNJ).  This jeopardizes our Thanksgiving dinner plans but meh- move that to Camp G- South as well.  Good times.

  • We lost power the night of the hurricane and it didn't come back until about 7pm last night.

Other than that nothing else really happened.  There were a few downed trees in my neighborhood but I don't think anyone was hurt.

  • I am seriously jealous of you people. This is the first time I have had even access to power/internet.

Let's see....this is really a vent at this point.

Lost power Sunday night and is still out. I received a phone call that our power will NOT be on until next week at the earliest. We have no electricity, heat, hot water or phones. My cell phone JUST started working yesterday after being out of service since Monday. I have not taken a shower since Monday, have to deal with a miserable 2 year old in my dark cold house with rotten food. Oh and an effing tree fell on our house and we have no clue how/who to even call to get that taken care of. I'm tired from lack of coffee, smell and am just miserable. I'm at work now and at least Ava's school has power.

Ok, I'm done. We are healthy and safe with hopefully little damage to our house since the tree hit out shed first which took most of the damage.

We may try to get a hotel room for the weekend someone around here though we will probably have to go into the city to find a hotel with electricity. If anyone wants to take us in for the week please stand up! lol.

We are getting rid of our Jersey evacuees today or tomorrow.  If you want to drive to DC, we will be more than happy to take you in.  I'm sure J won't mind sharing toys- he loves the ladies.

I am so sorry.  I hope the tree didn't do too much damage!  We are in the same boat with you and getting power.  This morning they changed our estimated date for getting back power from 11/5 to 11/9.  I seriously just had a breakdown in my cube crying.  I just wish it wasn't so cold so we could be in our house.  My daughter has been crying every night to go home.  I hope you guys find a hotel.  I'll be thinking about you.

  • Oh crap Lando - so sorry!! I guess we were right about the low priority right?! We're not back up either. So thankful we don't close on Philly until next week.
  • Thanks Lando, and sorry about your situation as well :( Our house it's too cold that it would be unsafe to stay, but it is definitely getting colder by the day. We have one wood-burning fireplace in our dining room but it really doesn't warm up the whole house. Ahh......I guess we are just going to have to ride it out but it surely is not fun :(
  • Hi girls. We've been without power since Monday at 7pm.  Two trees fell in our neighborhood- one on our neighbor's house and another on the power lines. Our lamppost snapped in half but we are otherwise fine. We have been at dh's brothers house since Tuesday morning. Thankfully we have a gas fireplace so we were able to keep warm Monday night at home. The baby slept through most of it and has been pretty well behaved. We are supposed to get power back tomorrow. I went home and unplugged everything yesterday after heating about a family friend who had a big fire when the power surged back on in her neighborhood.

Amazingly my MILs house in Brigantine is fine. She had the house raised a few years back but the water line was 5 feet high on her foundation. She lives on the north end near the beach and the bay where they got the most flooding.
