HR people, come in!

So, DH got offered a job at a very large international company that he is thrilled about. Everything is set, but he is waiting to give notice at his current job until the background check is complete just to be safe. There is nothing in DH's life that would prevent him from getting a job- no criminal record, shady employment or credit hostory, etc. However, the company said the process takes 5-10 days. Today is day 5 so he emailed to check in on whether it is complete, and HR said they are reviewing most of it, but that they are having trouble verifying part of his background and will contact him if they need his help. They did not give a specific.

DH is now freaking out, which I think is unfounded.I'm guessing this is an issue of getting ahold of an old employer or landlord and it is just taking time.  I'm just curious if this is something common or likely benign or if he really should be worried. Anyone have any input?

  • Sorry, I don't have any advice/insight. But I did want to say congrats to him on the (almost) new job :) Hopefully it's what you think it is (difficulty verifying info with a landlord, previous employment, etc.)

  • Thanks! I think we are extra nervous because this is basically his dream job so of course you always worry more the better something could be!

  • Could it be education?  That can take a few days to verify especially if college was out of state, etc. I do HR among other things in my department and the background checks usually take a week. We verify past employment, college education and criminal. Sometimes references are checked, mostly just a form former surpervisors have to complete on if they'd recommend applicant or not.  For us, lying on application of education/college hours or having recent criminal record would be the reasons position would not be offered. If there's nothing to worry about, your husband shouldn't freak out, I'm sure it will be fine, good luck and congrats!
  • Thank you- that eases my mind a lot!

  • I think your assumptions are correct.  Verifying his degree, an old job, etc can take time.  I wouldnt worry too much.
  • If he has lived in different towns then they need to verify he has no record in each town. Some are faster than others. He shouldn't freak out but he's also doing the right thing by waiting to give notice.
