Thanksgiving Menu??

We are hosting Thanksgiving for the first time this year (glug!) and trying to keep it simple.

I'm thinking:

turkey (duh) and stuffing

au gratin potatoes

mashed sweet potatoes

corn casserole

cranberry sauce

roast brussel sprouts

rolls

dessert -

pumpkin pie

cranberry cheesecake

I'll just do cheese and crackers and some kind of dip for appetizers.

  • That sounds good to me! You're missing green bean casserole, but I don't know if that's something your family usually does. I personally would riot if it was missing, but that's me Smile

Oh gravy. Gotta have that, right?

  • I think it sounds good...is anyone bringing anything to help you?
  • If you want a really simple appetizer pour a can of apple pie filling over brie and bake until bubbley.

oh yes - we're doing turkey and stuffing (and gravy!), brussel sprouts and potatoes au gratin I'm trying to figure out what to assign to my mother and MIL. They both will go crazy and make 7 sides each

  • I'm going to my parent's in AZ this year for Thanksgiving. I'm not sad to be going there, but I am sad that I'm not cooking Thanksgiving dinner. My mom has been making dinner for lord-knows-how-many-years, and she's a purist, so I don't even bothering trying to contribute anymore (I like to make things with a twist -- like orange-scented cranberry sauce, or sweet potato salad with cranberries, goat cheese, and walnuts instead of candied sweet potatoes. Purists don't appreciate things like that.)

Last year was the first year I made dinner, and I had so much fun. This was my menu:

    Roast Turkey
    Chardonnay gravy
    Green beans with mushroom sauce
    Garlic mashed potatoes
    Corn casserole
    Sweet Potato salad
    Cranberry sauce
    Stuffing
    Sweet potato biscuits

We had a ton of desserts other people brought.

  • It sounds like plenty to me.

BTW - Thank you for your email. I think we've found a restaurant possibility but my mom's going to call and double check that they'll be open.

  • Sounds fine to me.

    Here's mine:

Cheese/crackers, black bean dip, guacamole, salsa for apps

    turkey

stuffing (not in the turkey, because I am vegetarian)

mashed potatoes (my sister brings them)

    mashed sweet potatoes

cranberry orange salad (my cousins bring this)

    roasted brussel sprouts

    green bean casserole

    rolls

    gravy

    dessert -

    pumpkin pie

bourbon pecan pie (made with chocolate)

    Vanilla Ice cream

  • My family always had sauerkraut at Thanksgiving. Not sure if it's a German or regional thing, but my MIL (not originally from Maryland) had never heard of this so when we have T-giving with them I always have to bring the sauerkraut if I want it. I would also riot without green bean casserole so I sometimes make that too.

  • Great menu!  I'll have to look up the cranberry cheesecake recipe, sounds really good.  If you're looking for an idea for a "green" I have a good recipe for creamed spinach, it's a copy-cat from Boston Market's version.
